"Inej, what did you find?" Kaz asked as the Wraith fell into step beside them. Paedyn threw a glance towards Jesper every now and then, but said nothing, just like she did when Kaz revealed that her friend was a Durast. She understood what is was like to be Grisha and want it to be a secret.
Inej threw a glance at Paedyn, "We're accused of murdering Tante Heleen."
"She's dead?" Paedyn groaned, wanting to be the one who stopped the lady's heart.
"Wait, what? We didn't do that, though. Unless..." he trailed off, looking down at the Tidemaker.
She rolled her eyes. "I didn't kill her, although I wish I had."
"It was Pekka Rollins," Kaz said.
"Why?" Jesper asked. "And why take it out on Tante Heleen?"
"She held the deed to the Crow Club," Kaz admitted. "We cut a deal so Inej and Paedyn could help us with the Sun Summoner, so Rollins killed her. The deal was broken once I was accused of her murder."
"He owns the club. Everyone who works there now works for Pekka Rollins," Inej added.
"That's not all he owns, is it?" Paedyn asked. Her fears were confirmed when Inej raised her wrist, her tattoo on display. Paedyn rolled her sleeve up, brushing a finger against her own tattoo. "The Menagerie," she whispered, closing her eyes tightly.
"He owns that now, too. Along with everything else the Menagerie owns."
Paedyn shook her head. "No, I can't go back. It was bad enough when Heleen was running it, but now..."
Kaz frowned but took some money from his pocket and passed it to both girls.
"What's this for?" Inej asked.
"We aren't the only ones under a false accusation. Your Saint has a new bounty on her head. This time from Fjerda," Kaz said.
"They think she's in cahoots with the Darkling," Jesper added.
"This is your ticket to go and protect her. Both of you." Kaz's eyes met Paedyn's and she didn't know whether to punch him or take it and run.
"You're sending us away?" Inej frowned.
"I promised you freedom," Kaz replied.
"This isn't freedom, Kaz. Even if we're in another country, Pekka owns us. He'll find us." Paedyn looked back up at him.
"It isn't your fight now." Kaz replied, glancing at the group before his eyes found hers again. "It's mine."
"I'm not leaving you," Paedyn stated, handing him the money back. "Not now. Your fight is mine. I'll fight with you."
"What happens to Saints is fate. What happens here is up to us." Inej added, handing Kaz the money back.
"Just stay in the shadows. All of you," Kaz began, "We reconvene in two bells at the end of Rozenstraat. Look for a workshop around the back."
