a lovely marriage

"The Neshyenyer? Sankta Neyar's blade?" Nina asked, glancing up at Zoya when she tore her eyes away from the letter.

"So, you haven't forgotten what you were taught at the Little Palace. Just your loyalty to Ravka," Zoya sneered.

"Ravka? Or Kirigan?" Nina asked. "It didn't take him destroying a city for me to question my loyalty."

Before Zoya could bite back, Paedyn stood up and laid a hand on both of their shoulders.

"Okay, that's enough. I understand that you two have never quite gotten along, but right now, the fate of Ravka is a bit more important than your quarrels."

Kaz watched as Paedyn deescalated the situation, letting her do her thing since she had known both girls before she left the Little Palace.

"What's the payment for this job?" Jesper asked, now that both girls were resorting to looking the other way with their arms crossed.

"Name your price," Tolya said, a member of the prince's crew. "That's how important this is. Prince Nikolai requests your services to retrieve and deliver the Neshyenyer to Alina Starkov in East Ravka."

"She's returned?" Nina asked.

"As has the Darkling. With an indestructible army of shadow monsters," Zoya replied. Paedyn let out a small gasp, her thoughts going straight to her sister as her hand gripped the table. Zoya placed a hand over the girl's white knuckles. "Speaking of him, your sister is fine. Evangeline is with the prince and Alina as we speak."

Paedyn nodded. "Okay. Okay, thank you."

"I don't like the sound of an army of shadow monsters," Jesper muttered. "Are we sure Ravka needs saving?"

"This is bigger than just Ravka," Zoya snapped. "Alina needs the blade to kill the monsters. It's the only thing that might work."

"I'll go with you," Paedyn nodded to Zoya and Tolya. "You don't need to pay me."

"Retrieve the blade and the prince will pay what you ask," Tolya explained to the others, throwing a nod to Paedyn.

"But I like the sound of that," Jesper said as he grinned.

"I assume the same goes for you?" Zoya turned her head to Kaz. Paedyn turned around to look at him, whom merely raised an eyebrow.

"I'd welcome the chance to help your prince spend his country's money."

"I don't need kruge," Nina said. "I need to get someone out of Hellgate. Lantsovs must be able to pull strings with the Kerch government."

"For a certain Fjerdan?" Zoya questioned. "He must be quite the slab of fur."

"Zoya," Paedyn hissed.

"The offer is the offer. Prince Nikolai is a man of his word," Tolya intervened.

"But we need to go now," Zoya added.
