the crow club
Paedyn sat at a table in the corner of the new Crow Club. Kaz had really outdone himself with the money Nikolai had graciously given them. They even had enough to spare for new clothes, like the dark green dress Paedyn had on.
The Raven watched with pride as her crow walked towards her, a member of the Dregs walking behind him as he gave orders.
"No more malt liquor," Kaz said, "I want port wine, Kaelish whiskey, and spiced rum. And go to the Menagerie and look for a girl name Kesh. Tell her I'll buy out any indenture who'd rather work as a serving girl at the Crow Club. Drinks, waiting tables, charming the customers. No skin trade-" he handed the man a set of papers, "-this is a salaried position."
The man nodded before fleeing out the door into the pouring rain and Kaz turned back to the girl in the corner.
He walked up to her, rather quickly for a man with a cane, and gently brought her gloved hand up to his lips.
"Hi, you," she grinned as he pulled her from her chair and led her to the bar. The bartender on duty slid them both a glass of whiskey. "How are things up in your office?"
Kaz turned to Paedyn as she took a sip of her drink. He shrugged. "The usual, you know how it is."
"No new jobs?"
Her love gave her a smirk, but Kaz stayed silent. "You'll just have to wait and see like everyone else."
"Boring," Paedyn mumbled, tipping her head back and finishing off her glass.
"Rough day?"
"Boring day. I really don't know how you can just sit down here and catch cheaters all day long."
"You're good at it," Kaz countered.
"Doesn't mean I like it."
"Okay then. What would you like to do? Go back to bartending?"
"I was thinking," Paedyn giggled, "about how you could use an assistant to help you go through all those papers. Someone to spend quality time with, in silence with the window open and the rain hitting the roof."
Kaz closed his eyes for a second as he finished off his drink. "Sounds lovely. When can you start?"
"As soon as possible. Please." She playfully rolled her eyes.

"You four..." Kaz called as he found his crows sitting at an empty table. Paedyn, despite her pestering, had not figured out the job any sooner then the rest. "An opportunity has presented itself. The most lucrative job we've ever taken. There's a new weapon about to hit the market. If it does, it could make the destruction of the Shadow Fold seem like a spring picnic.
"Every corner of the world would feel the effects. It's a drug called jurda parem. Highly addictive. And if Grisha take it, their power is amplified a thousand times over. The chemist who created it fled to Kerch once he realized what he'd done, but the Fjerdans caught him. He now awaits trial.
"If the Fjerdans weaponize this drug, the consequences would be unimaginable. Everything we've ever known, every strength we've relied upon, shattered. Any questions?"
Everyone turned to make eye contact with each other, everyone coming to the same agreement.
Paedyn stood up, resting a gentle hand on Kaz's shoulder.
"To be frank, I don't give a damn how much it pays. But I'll stand with you. To save the world, again."
