The Light

"Thank you by the way" she whispered, I heard it, but I didn't say anything back, I have no idea what came over me when I helped her with her bangles, maybe it was the fact that I was grateful? For the very 'remarkable' solution she gave in the court.

I didn't have a problem with her presenting a solution but I still didn't trust her, letting her write that letter is a way to see was she really just trying to help or she got some friends in Abhira.

"Soldier! Call Alaaya" I tell the soldier.

"You asked for me your highness?" Alaaya enters my study room, "Yes Alaaya, I have the very first task for you, you need to get me the letter the Queen-to-be writes which is to be sent to the kingdom of Abhira" I tell her, she was a low-level spy recruited by me so I can keep the track of Shadow's activities.

"As you wish your highness" she bows down, "Anything else I can be help with?" she asks, "Nothing for now, if I will have something, I will call for you, never and I mean never, come looking for me, if you sense something wrong, you can tell my brother and he will convey your message to me" I tell her, my voice taking a rough tone, she is a little taken aback, but keeps her composure.

"Yes Maharaj, I will keep that in mind, now if you may" she bows down and takes her leave.

An hour later I hear a knock on my study where I had remained to research more on the dacoits of my kingdom and by far, I have captured 4 of such groups.

"Come in" I answer, 'Your highness, this is the letter you needed" Alaaya hands me the letter, "I hope it was not difficult to retrieve this letter" I ask keeping my tone soft, "It was not your highness, she entrusted me with the letter and asked me to give it to the one who would carry this to Abhira" she tells me keeping her head low and voice just above a whisper.

"You know you shouldn't speak like you are a frightened puppy, talk a little louder, be a little more confident" I advise while tearing the seal on the letter, "Huh? That's the same thing she said" she says, speaking a little louder, "She? Who?" I inquire, my attention divided half in the tearing process and half on the conversation, "Your to-be wife your highness" she says, "Uh huh, that's a first, us agreeing on something, that just means you need to work on that confidence of yours Alaaya, don't be meek, be strong" I tell her, my eyes, on the letter in my hand neatly folded.

"Dismissed" I call out, and within seconds my quarter is empty, I unfold the letter to read what's written inside,

Dear Bhaswar,

It's been a long time since you have heard from me and I know you want to keep it that way.

If you don't want me coming back to your treacherous land, make sure you stop the construction of this Dam on the Gomti river, I know you were expecting a full-fledged war, but if I come there, it won't be war, it would be massacre.

I hope you remember what happened to your son because of his stupid decision, let me tell you this 'plan' that you have devised is also a stupid decision and it would only take one slash of my sword to tear your delicate neck apart.

I am saying this because I really like you and it would be very sad if I have to kill you because of a dam.

I know what you must be thinking, why do I care?

This problem that you have created, is troubling my fiancé a lot and as a good fiancée that I am, I want nothing to trouble him.

I hope this finds you in good health and you work on it, because then your health will seriously deteriorate.

Lovingly, yours,

The Shadow.

And she had planted a kiss on the bottom of the letter, clearly mocking the warning she had given above.

Now I knew what she meant by her 'name' solving the problem. I am glad I don't have to send troops to the borders now, I need them for other purposes. But I never imagined she would mention me and also as her fiancé, I thought she didn't want this marriage.

"I knew it" I hear a voice, and I see her standing on the door, leaning on the frame, arms crossed, "I knew you would read that letter" she smirks, "I hope you like how I discreetly mentioned you?" she smiles and sits in front of me, one leg crossed over the other, "You really think this would work?" I question just to annoy her; she doesn't like it when someone questions her.

"If Bhaswar got any brains on him, he knows not to not take this letter seriously if he works against my wishes, he will watch the demise of his whole clan. I have already killed his son, he has no heir left for his kingdom, he would be stupid to not do as I ask" she grins.

"I appreciate the help" I tell her, "Don't you have anything else to say?" she mocks, "No?" "Nothing? Like a little thank you? Or a sorry that I didn't trust you? Nothing at all?" she frowns, "I said, I appreciate it, more than that, no I have nothing" I tell her and smile, how does it feel like after taking a taste of your own medicine? I think.

"Humph fine! But you stooped low with putting a spy behind my tail" she raises her eyebrow, "Spy? What are you talking about?" I lie, "Alaaya? You are really going to pretend she is not a spy, King?" she pouts, "Well I guess you caught me Little Killer. This time." I tell her.

"Its time for you to go back to your quarters and have a good night's sleep, Shubh Ratri (Good night)" I smile and turn my back to go finish my research.

"Shubh Ratri" She mumbles and departs.

"That was cute" I hear Adwith from the other side of the room, "You really need to stop using the secret passage ways for your own comfort" I tell him, "I am a prince, I can do whatever I want to do" he says, bobbing his neck side to side.

"Why are you here?" I ask, "I have news" he composes himself, his voice getting deep.

When will he stop trying to copy me, this kid!
