Jealousy.Silence filled the night.
A small orange light crackled in the darkness.
The moonlight illuminated the puff of smoke that drifted towards me, accompanied by the sound of a relaxed exhale.
Their body was cloaked in shadow, shielding my vision of every feature.
I could feel my heart in my throat, throbbing uncontrollably by the eerie silence.
"Who's there?" I demanded, trying to hide the fear in my voice.
"Calm down firecracker," the figure moved slowly towards me as the light lit up their face in a blue hue. "It's just me"
A sigh of relief escaped my lungs as my mind registered his loose bun.
"Don't sneak up on people like that" I rasped, gripping my chest as I kneeled over to slow my heart beat from completely flopping out of my chest.
He flicked his cigarette onto the pavement as he stepped closer.
"My apologies Sammy, I didn't mean to scare you" he chucked with satisfaction. A smug look on his face.
I glared at him before moving to collapse on the steps.
"Ya know, it's really starting to grate on my nerves that everyone knows my name but I don't know yours"
He didn't answer.
He looked at me longer than I would've liked. Analysing me.
He took a step closer.
"I wanted to apologise"
My eyes lifted to meet his. I could see the guilt buried within them as he gazed at me.
I couldn't help but look away. "For what?"
He slowly and cautiously took a seat beside me.
He kept a comfortable distance between us which I was thankful for, facing forward as he laced his hands together atop his knees.
"About your arms"
My mind lost all thought as I struggled to comprehend his words.
"I didn't mean to invade your privacy and I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. If you did that to yourself then-"
"I didn't" I cut him off.
He nodded silently, leaving space for me to continue.
"This wasn't that." I said lowering my head.
"I'm not judging you Sammy. There are alot of fucked up people in the world and I meant it when I said you're safe here"
All I could do was nod slowly. I didn't really know what to say.
"I also wanted to thank you" he said brightly.
"Wow, apologies and thanks, it must be my lucky day." I retorted.
He smiled as his eyes drifted from the concrete up to the young girl sitting by a happy puppy.
"Skylar's been through alot. She doesn't open up easily. What you said to her, thank you"
The sincerity in his voice told me he spoke the truth.
He only wanted what's best for her.
He looked at me and I felt my heart beat loudly in my chest.
His green eyes scanned my features in a way that made my cheeks heat.
Slow, as if he was trying to commit every detail to memory.
