*This is a long one... you might wanna get comfortable*
Damien.
"Dam... wake up... Damien..."
I could hear the words, but I couldn't register who was speaking, my body heavy with sleeplessness and exhaustion. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to drown out the noise.
"Sam is gone"
My eyes shot open before they flicked to Skyler. She stood beside me with the driver side door open, her hands resting on my shoulder as she looked me over with wide, panicked eyes.
"What?" I said, turning my legs to step out of the car.
Skyler backstepped as she stammered "I-I don't know. He was supposed to wake up Bianca but he didn't, she woke up Daz"
It was still dark out, and I wondered how long he'd been gone.
I made my way over to Bianca who was silently crying beside Daz in the back of the van.
"Tell me what happened," I said bluntly, looking down at her.
She looked up at me as she sniffled, trying to gain the composure to speak. "He was supposed to come get me so we could play hide and seek, but he didn't come"
My eyes shot to Daz, needing more information.
He looked at me, before quietly telling Bianca to move deeper into the van to sit with Travis. She did as he asked, crawling back and hugging him as new tears streamed down her face.
Daz stood, walking a few steps away from the van to talk to me, Skyler and Kieran privately. "She wasn't tired. Sam said he'd check and see if she was asleep, and if she wasn't they would play together. When he didn't come to get her after a few hours, she woke me up. I got up to look for him, and I noticed the fire had burnt out and Bleu was sitting in the dark, quietly whining... that's when I knew he'd been gone for some time"
A fizzing sensation bubbled in my chest, a feeling of adrenaline and anger as I stepped away from them, walking towards the van and sifting through my pack.
Returning to the others, I slammed the map down in the back of the van "Where's the closest camp?"
Bianca and Travis jumped from the impact and my eyes lifted to see them staring at me.
My head craned to the side as Daz came up beside me, looking over the locations with a quiet hum in this throat.
"We're here, so there" he said, pressing his finger down on the parchment.
"Let's go"
We packed up everything we needed, fuelled the tank and quickly shoved our things into the van before I took off down the road. I could smell the burnt rubber as I went.
My heart was beating one hundred miles a minute, my breath uneven as I shifted gears.
Where was he? Why didn't Bleu go with him? Was he safe?
I had so many questions that my mind tumbled when I thought about it, unable to comprehend the situation.
I screeched to a halt outside of the barbed wire fence that surrounded the truck stop, ripping up the handbrake before stepping out.
The others yelled, telling me to wait but my feet wouldn't stop.
I walked over to the fence, my pistol heavy on my thigh as men behind it shouted orders at me.
"I said, hands up" he yelled again with his gun trained on me.
I obliged, doing as he instructed.
"What do you want?"
