We eventually made it to route 5. It was nothing special, a few banged up cars and according to Damien, there was somewhere in the forest for us to sleep, but I don't know if I believed him. I don't feel like I can trust his judgement right now. Damien was crouched down, sucking on the hose to syphon the gas out of the broken down Toyota. It drained into a gas-can I assume he got back at the hotel.

Nobody has said a word since we moved on from our last stop. Nothing casual anyway. It's all survival talk. The tension was thick between us and I think everyone was feeling it.

Skyler looked over at me before stepping closer. "Has he always been like that?" I knew what she meant without her having to explain. Has he always tore the spines from things, has he always gone too far, has he always given in to bloodlust and murderous tendencies. "I don't know" I said quietly, my eyes following Damien as he stood to pick up the can.

I need to talk to him, he needs to explain, tell me something at least. I can't keep going like this. He needs to tell me what the fuck is going on.

Kieran came up behind us, leaning into us as he whispered "We should keep our distance. I've seen alot of things, but I've never seen that" our eyes went to Damien.

I felt the need to defend him but why? He's right. Damien is a potential threat. A ticking time bomb just waiting to go off and we'll all be caught in the shrapnel.

It started to sprinkle, little beads of water landed on my face sending a chill through me. "We should find some shelter, it looks like it's gunna get nasty" Daz said aloud to the group. We didn't know where to go, I didn't know this town and by the vibe of things, nobody else did either. Well everybody except Damien, he always seemed to know exactly where he was going. We followed behind Damien in a similar formation we were in before with Damien and Kieran protecting both sides.

I ditched my crutch when I got attacked. It was hindering my movement too much and made it difficult to grab my rifle. Thinking about it, I should give my rifle to someone who will use it and go back to what I know best, archery. I dabbled in it as a kid but I really got stuck into it once I was alone, when silence meant survival.

I walked slowly, my leg aching from the cold. My flannel was getting damp now, weighing me down. "If we go up there, there's a house we can take shelter in" Damien said, looking down at his hands, brushing them together as if he were rubbing off dirt.

I looked up at the dirt road that elevated up a pretty intimidating incline, at least it was in this weather when the dirt is wet and slippery. It was surrounded by trees, making me think it was a one way in, one way out type of landscape. It put me on edge but before I could say anything, everyone was already moving towards the hill. I sighed, giving in and walking behind them.

Every few minutes one of us would slip, we would have to grab them to save them from falling. The twins had it easy, being carried on the backs of Daz and Kieran. I huffed, the humid air stale in my lungs as I struggled to breathe. "Why do they get to be carried, I'm injured" I whined, visibly panting. "If you could just go up the hill and come back for me, that would be great"

Kieran chuckled and I could hear the exhaustion in his breath but he didn't show it. "No thanks, I think I'd rather stay up there" I lifted my eyes, the structure of a house coming into view. Damien must really love torture if he's sent us up this frickin' hill just for a damn house. I'm sure there are other houses he could have chosen. Ya know, closer ones that didn't require walking up a steep ass driveway.
