Allies Torn Asunder

I was sitting by the fire, alone with Bleu by my feet when Skyler walked in, plopping herself on the couch beside me and interrupting the sketch I was drawing. “What's that?” She asked, her interest piqued as she loomed over my shoulder.

“The monster from earlier” I said, never taking my eyes from the moving chunk of charcoal, making sure the details were just right.

“It's good” she said, moving away to slouch back into the cushions.

“I don't know it's name though, usually I add their name” I said idly. She hummed unknowingly with a shake of her head.

“Some don't have names” Damien's voice came from nowhere. I looked past Skyler to see him picking blankets and things up off the floor, cleaning up. I didn't hear him come in, like a ghost floating on invisible and silent legs. “Some mutate just out of pure genetics and can take on a completely different form than the rest of them”

“Then, what do I call it?” I asked, confused.

“Whatever you want” Skyler's head whipped towards me, her face lit up with the same excitement that I felt. “Oh my god you should name it The Mouth” she practically yelled, gesturing with her hands for dramatic effect.

I laughed “That's ridiculous”

My eyes flicked to Damien as I watched him leave the room. Her smile faded as her eyes followed mine to see Damien leaving before turning back to me. “So, what's going on there? Are you fucking him or what?”

I saw his back tense slightly at her comment before he disappeared behind the corner. Oh god, did he hear that? I hope he didn't hear that. “He'll hear you” I said flatly with a face of pure scolding.

“And?” She folded her arms over her chest. “It's not like it's a secret”

I sighed, my eyes closing knowing damn well I wasn't about to enjoy this conversation.

“So what's happening, come on, tell me.” She whined. “I need gossip, it will give my pitiful existence something to look forward to. Come on”

I rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly, not knowing what to say.

“I mean, one minute you and Damien seem to be together and the next thing I know, you're all over Kieran, like, what's the deal there?” She rambled, making my mind seem to overload and short circuit before answering

“Theres no deal, we just, got caught up in the moment I guess”

“But aren't you with Damien?” She asked softly, a new emotion coating her words, making the guilt in my chest all the more evident.

“No, I mean, not really..”

She sighed quietly as her eyebrows lifted, leaning back into the sofa. “Well if I were you, I'd get a piece of that. I mean Kieran's alright but he's all scraggly lookin’ and hippy-like, whereas Damien is built like a greek god, statues would be made after him.”

I didn't quite understand what she meant by Kieran being scraggly and hippy-like, to me he was attractive with his silver jewellery, green eyes and his wavy brown hair he kept in a bun most days. His body was slim but muscular, like an olympic swimmer. One of a man who kept his body in shape, somehow.

Damien was in fact attractive as well, but I wouldn't describe him as a greek god. He gave off a darker element to him with his chocolate eyes and dark stubble. He didn't wear jewellery but those motorcycle gloves he wore did something to me. Something that fed the darkest parts of my mind so deeply, it made me question the concept of consent. I think I'd let him do whatever he wanted to me… I didn’t know how to describe him exactly, he was just mysterious, with his body built like a man who had done hard labour all his life; like a woodcutter in the mountains or a blacksmith in a forge.
