Hide & Seek
We walked for eternity, that's the only way I can describe it walking on this deserted and empty country road. There were only a few rusted cars and the fence that lined the dry field to my left seemed to stretch on forever.
I looked ahead to see Damien searching his surroundings. He said that sticking to this road would be a good idea because we can see an incoming threat. I guess he's right, there's nothing else to look at aside from the road, the field, the treeline and the broken-down cars that littered the streets, but I don't think the infected can drive, so....
I chucked aloud, thinking about an oversized pink mutant driving a car, it's tentacles flailing about in the wind. "What?" Skyler asked, bumping her shoulder into me slightly. "It's nothing," I said.
I glanced back at Kieran who had been behind me for the better part of an hour. His eyes locked with mine before he flashed a cheesy smile. It made me smirk before I turned back around. "Do you think the zombies will attack us out here, I mean, they seem to be drawn to noise but we've made alot of noise over the last few days and I haven't seen a single one?" I asked Skyler. She hummed quietly as she thought about my question. "They are attracted to noise but I don't know why they didn't attack us, maybe there weren't any in the area" she shrugged. "It's possible that they didn't come because there was a louder noise than ours. It was probably the truck and his friends, they were pretty loud as they took off, yelling and hollering like idiots" Kieran shook his head slightly, lowering his eyes as if he was truly disappointed by their stupidity.
The group slowed as Damien stopped, eyeing the four cars ahead of us that looked like they had smashed into one another decades ago. "Check those cars for any supplies, Kieran and I will keep watch but be careful, we don't know what's inside" I saw Kieran nod in my peripheral vision, turning around to face behind us. His shotgun held loosely in his hands.
Daz looked to me and Skyler. "Sam, you stay here with the kids, me and Sky will-" she scoffed loudly. "I know you've got some fight left in you old man but we've got this" she said, walking forward and winking at him. He smiled while shaking his head at her. She gestured for me to follow while yelling back a "Come on Sam" my way.
It didn't sit right with me that he didn't want me to help. I'm injured, yes, but who's going to take care of the kids if he gets hurt? I don't think Skyler could take on that mental responsibility and Kieran, I don't even know where he stands. I know he cares about them but raising them is a whole other story.
I limped quickly to catch up to her, she was already sticking her head inside one of the backseat windows by the time I reached her. "There's nothing here," She pulls the car door open with a smirk "it's unlocked though" she sat down, sifting through the papers and junk stuffed in the back of the seat pockets. I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do with this stupid crutch hindering my movement. "Check the boot, will ya" She didn't look up at me, her eyes locked on the contents inside the car.
I made my way to the trunk. Opening it was more difficult than I thought it would be, my crutch clanged against the bumper as I tried to get close enough to lift it but with one hand it felt like it was rusted shut. I could feel the mechanism open as I pushed in the button but it wouldn't budge. Damien appeared next to me, lifting it with one hand before his hand rested on his gun, looking around at his surroundings again.
I stared at him, his molten brown eyes moved slowly along the treeline. He looked more relaxed than I would have expected, being out here for anyone to see. "Thanks" I said quietly, it was embarrassing not being able to do something so simple. He nodded once, his eyes lowering as he did. I turned my attention back on the car, the trunk didn't have anything useful. I sighed in defeat.
