We went over to Mike's house with the strange girl. The party seemed weirded out, but I knew the look on her face that she wouldn't hurt us. She was obviously scared out of her mind, and though the boys couldn't tell, I could, and I felt bad. We sat her down on Mike's basement couch, Dustin pacing nervously before standing in a line with us, staring at her. Mike was in either in complete confusion, fear, or possibly even awe.
"Is there a number we can call? For your parents?"
"Where's your hair? Do you have cancer?"
"Did you run away?" I stand there rubbing my left temple, a migraine of confusion and cold hitting me like a train. I try to return my attention to the girl while the party continues to bombard her with questions.
"Are you in some kind of trouble?"
"Is that blood?"
"Stop it! You're freaking her out!"
"She's freaking me out!"
"I bet she's deaf." Dustin holds out his hands and claps, making her jump. I hold out a hand to try to comfort her, using the other one to pull back Dustin's hand while I glare at him.
"Not deaf..." He mutters.
"Hey, guys, she's just scared. Scared and cold. She needs clothes, warm and dry clothes. Mike, go get something." I say. Mike nods and goes upstairs. He returns with a pile of clothes and I hold my hand out for the little girl to take, with a warm smile. She shies away from my hand for a second but eventually grabs my hand back. I help her up and Mike holds out the clothes. The girl crosses her arms and grabs the sides of her oversized shirt she is wearing. The boys exclaim in disgust and I cover her so the boys don't see it. I keep smiling, so as not to embarrass her, then lead her to the bathroom.
"I'm Callie, Callie Hopper, by the way. Here you go, these are all clean." I say quietly. She takes the clothes from me and I start to close the door, before she stops me.
"No." She says quietly.
"You speak? Okay... good to know. Well, let's leave the door open, like, three inches, okay?" I say to her, almost entirely closing the door. I him, asking for her approval.
"Yes." She says back. I walk back over to the boys, who are almost yelling, so I shush them immediately. As of my day hadn't been shitty enough, I don't want Mrs. Wheeler finding out about this and banning me from seeing the boys.
"This is mental!" Dustin said to me.
"She talks. She said 'yes' and 'no' to me. She's traumatized, not dangerous. I can just tell!" Dustin looks up at me, believing me, but Mike is looking into space, and Lucas is glaring at me in disbelief.
"She said 'yes' and 'no'? Mike's three-year-old sister says more, Callie!" Dustin adopted a pensive look on his face.
"She did try to get naked..." His eyes widened.
"There's something seriously wrong with her. Like, wrong in the head!" Lucas said.
"She just went like..." Dustin motions how the girl tried to take off her shirt. He bumps his hat and it falls off, making me roll my eyes at him. I turn to the bathroom, seeing the girl look at herself in the mirror.
"I bet she escaped from Pennhurst."
"Where?"
"The nuthouse in Kerley county."
"You got a lot of family there." I turn my attention back to the party.
"Bite me!"
"Boys! Be nice!" I exclaim.
