I jolted up from my nightmare. I had dreamt that the demogorgon returned and was hunting me. I walked over to the mirror over my vanity to see a thin layer of sweat on my forehead. While I definitely needed a shower, El needed breakfast first. After washing the frying pan, I began to make scrambled eggs while quietly humming to myself.
"Ghost." I hear behind me, making me jump.
"Oh, Jesus! El, you scared me." I gasped. I took a look at her getup and smirked. "Ah, ghost costume. You're a genius! They'd never see you!"
"Will Hopper let me?" She stared at me.
"Well... it's always good to try." I sighed, already knowing what Hopper's response is but not wanting to crush her hope. Dad walked in, coming over to me and kissing my head.
"Hey, kid. Woah." He looked over at El.
"Ghost." She repeated.
"I see that." He grumbled.
"Halloween." She said.
"Sure is, but right now it's Breakfast, okay?" He answered, slightly sarcastic. I poured out some eggs onto each of our plates.
"They wouldn't see me." El told him.
"Who wouldn't see you?" Dad questioned, not catching her drift.
"Trick or Treat." El stated.
"You want to go trick or treating?" Dad asked. I rolled my eyes at his confusion. El nodded and I throw her an encouraging smile.
"You know the rules." Dad plainly stated.
"Yes but-" She began.
"Yeah, but they wouldn't see me!" She argued.
"Dad-" I interjected.
"I don't care! I don't care, alright? Ghost or not, it's a risk, and don't take risks. They're stupid, and..." He stated.
"We're not stupid." El and I said in unison, me in more of a mutter, and El in a stern tone.
"Okay, okay. Let's do breakfast now, okay?" I say, sitting down, pulling off El's sheet for her.
"All right, look... How about I get off early tonight, and I buy us a bunch of candy, and we can sit around and get fat, and we watch a scary movie together? How's that for a compromise?" Dad suggested.
"Compromise?" El furrowed her brows.
"C-O-M- promise. Compromise." He repeats, before defining it. "It's something kinda in-between. It's like halfway happy."
"Hey!" I put a hand on her shoulder. "How about that's your word for the day, huh?"
"By 5-1-5?" El asked.
"5:15." I corrected.
"Yeah, sure." Dad confirmed.
"Halfway happy." She reluctantly concluded.
After breakfast, I took a quick shower, got dressed, and drove myself to school. While walking through the halls with my headphones on, I heard faint footsteps through my music. I tirned around to see Billy Hargrove walking up to me. I pulled down my headphones as he approached me.
"Hi." He smirked.
"Hello?" I answered, confused.
"We still on for tonight?" He asked.
"Oh, shit, I totally forgot. Yeah, yeah, 8:00." I clarified. I couldn't believe I forgot something like that.
"Cool. See ya." And with that, he walked away, making me scoff. I spotted Jonathan out of the corner of my eye, staring over at me, and I walked over to him.
