(also this is what i imagined callie's room in the cabin would look like)
The small egg timer in the kitchen rings loudly and I trip over my jeans, which flare out at my knees and drape over my feet. I rush to the kitchen, one eye finished with makeup, the other not, and my hair messy and poofy in a blue hair tie. I turn off the timer, and I open the over and try to take the sheet out of the oven, burning my hand in the act.
"Shit!" I tell, muffled in my sweater. I grab a towel and pull the sheet out of the oven and onto the stovetop. I grab a cookie, blow on it, and take a bite.
"Nailed it." I states, running to the bathroom to finish getting ready. I hear a giggle from the couch at my comment.
After the events of last year, Dad found El, living in the woods, starving and dirty. We moved into a cabin in the middle of the woods, that used to belong to my great-grandpa. It was nice, and it had a ton of new vinyls. El obviously couldn't leave or go to school, so after school, I tutor her. We do math, history, and I'm really trying to teach her more vocabulary, using words of the day. She misses Mike a lot, but there's really nothing we can do that wouldn't put people in danger. She's kind of like my little sister, and I really enjoy having her around. Dad's been so much happier with her around, and we just feel like a complete family.
"Don't you giggle, young lady, or you won't get any!" I point over at her, before closing the door to the bathroom, putting my walkman headphone in, and turn on 'Runaway' by Bon Jovi. After my makeup is done, I take a look at my hair. Without removing my headphones , and take it out of the ponytail and smile at the shape it takes behind the headphones. It's perfect. I take some hairspray and spray it while I pop my gum and sing.
"She don't really mind, It's only love she hoped to find. Oh, she's a little runaway, Daddy's girl learned fast, All those things she couldn't say!" I choke and cough a bit at the hairspray and take off my headphones, smiling at the fabulous hair shape. I grab my keys off the hook in the living room and pointed over at El.
"Hey, no goofing off while I'm gone, okay? Cookies are over there, if you want some. I'll be back when the clock says nine-one-five." We hadn't covered telling time yet. "Goodbye, El. Love you."
"Love you, Callie." She smiled up at me. I left and hopped in my new Toyota Camry. I was sixteen now, and I had got my license, so Dad and I split the cost of a car for me. I turned the radio on blast, and drove to the arcade to meet the boys. Once I arrived, I saw Will saying goodbye to his mom. I walked up once he was finished talking to her and walked in with him.
"Ready? I think I saw the rest of the party already." I sling my arm around his shoulder and meet with the other boys. They crowd around Dragon's Lair, and we watch Dustin play.
"To slay the dragon, use the magic sword!" The princess in the game instructs.
"Oh, Jesus! I'm in uncharted territory here, guys." He sighs. The boys all clamored over the game, and Dustin's character became charred by the dragon on the screen. I winced and Dustin banged on the game.
"No, no, no! I hate this overpriced bullshit! Piece of shit!" He yelled.
"You're not nimble enough. But you'll get there one day. But until then, Princess Daphne is still mine." Lucas brags.
"Whatever, I'm still tops on Centipede and Dig Dug." He assures. A voice behind us make me gasp and jump a little.
"You sure about that?" Keith, a kid in my grade who worked at the arcade inquired.
"Geez, you scared me!" He didn't respond, and just stared at me awkwardly.
"Sure about what?" Dustin checked. "You're kidding me. No, no, no!" He complains, rushing over to the Dig Dug machine.
