Season 1 - Episode 4
Isabelle shouted as the nurses applied the antibiotic cream on the 3rd degree burns on her left shoulder, back and legs. They had given her pain medication, but the drugs didn't do anything to her.
It was day 1 of having been in the burn unit of the Beacon Hills hospital. They had hosed her down, removed as much dead skin as they could but the pain was still there.
Laura had talked with the doctors about possible treatments, skin grafts were a consideration. To help Isabelle recover a semblance of a normal life.
Isabelle had been out of her mind the night before. She was screaming, crying, going mad. She didn't remember much about the night, she saw the flashes of fire and heard the screams. The deputy's department tried to gently ask her questions. She couldn't answer a single one.
But as far as she knew, or as much as she could understand, she was the only survivor. Peter had survived as well, but he couldn't talk to them. He was essentially dead.
Laura had been trying to figure things out. Planning their next move. They had arranged an apartment and thankfully, all the important papers like Isabelle's birth certificate and medical insurance were in her parents home.
Laura was trying her best to keep it together as the oldest. Everyone was dead. She was covered in blood that was mostly hers and she had a kid that she was now in charge of. And a brother who she didn't know whether he was mad at her or disappointed.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Derek asked. Both were walking through the hospital, their phones ringing with desperate calls from their friends.
"I didn't know how " Laura admits, her throat wanting to close up from the emotion as she sipped her coffee. She looked at her phone, another incoming call from Shane.
"It doesn't matter now."
Entering the lobby, the siblings froze when they saw a shrine that hadn't been there before. A picture of their uncle Nathan rested in the middle of flowers and candles. Nathan Hale, or Dr. Hale, worked at the very hospital they were in.
The shrine was created by his co-workers and friends, all who grieved his passing. But none so more than them. Laura and Derek loved their uncle, they loved them all. Nathan was like a father to them, their own fathers were nothing but mere footnotes in their lives. Talia, their mother, never talked about them. Their uncle Nathan was always kind, he helped them with their homework when they needed it and offered everything a father would. Even if they weren’t related by blood.
"Laura! Derek!"
The Hales turned to see their friends running up to them. Hannah, her fiery red hair a mess of curls when she reached them.
Laura gladly accepted Hannah's hug, being in her embrace she wanted to cry but she knew she couldn't. Hannah moved onto Derek, and he latched on tight. He hid his tears well enough, Hannah muttered some soft words to help him.
"Are you guys okay?" She asked, looking between them both. Hannah Martin. Laura's best friend and Derek's girlfriend. She was weirded out by the prospect when they first started going out. But she couldn't exactly complain because she herself had been dating Derek's best friend. Hannah had vibrant red hair that felt like silk at the touch, with blue eyes. Hannah was probably the kindest person they had ever met.
Laura managed to put on a small smile and nod, Hannah reached out her hand and she gladly took it. "We're as good as we can be Han."
Hannah knew that was a flat out lie the moment it came out of her mouth, that’s the thing about Hales. They are experts in making everyone around them think they are okay, even when they weren’t and everyone knows it.
