chapter thirteen ꩜ jules' crushnow playing: despair by leo
↻ ◁ II ▷ ↺BREAKFAST WAS THE ONE MEAL OF THE DAY where the Chungs felt like an actual, functional, and out of a magazine family. Jules would wake up after her parents, get herself ready and then walk downstairs to cut fruits for her yoghurt. Then, she'd head to the table, where her father was animatedly talking with her mother about work and gossip, and she'd listen from time to time.
"Cristine is pregnant again," her mother said, looking at her husband shaking his head in disapproval.
"She's always on maternity license," he'd complain. "Nepotism really works wonders for her."
Whenever a comment of the sort resurfaced, he'd look at Jules and then lean closer to her: "You'll have to work hard once your Dad becomes a CEO, honey. I'm not letting you off the hook."
Jules would nod, then go back to her yoghurt, and her mother would notice the sudden change of expressions her father always missed. So, she'd ask the same monotonous thing.
'How's school going?'
However, today was different.
"How's Lynn?"
Jules hid her surprise very well, the same way she'd hide any emotion from both adults. "Great. She's got another basketball game in two weeks, so she invited me to practice on wednesday."
The woman nodded, and kept the chat going. "You've been hanging out with her a lot, I didn't know you were friends."
Jules shrugged. "Guess the essay brought us together. The Louds are nice people."
Her father looked at her, then smiled. "So, what have you planned for today?"
After weeks of postponing it, Jules was finally going out with her father for quality time together. The girl begged him for it a while back, after midnight, when they both met on the living room's couch, sleepless.
