Theo knelt down next to the little boy and smiled kindly. " Hello there. My name is Theo. That's my husband Reed. We're..... we're getting help for your mommy. That's your mommy right?"

The mommy who claimed she needed money from Vanessa for the child's braces. Theo very much doubted that. The little boy barely had teeth in his tiny mouth. Theo couldn't fault the dead woman's efforts to get money though. Not living where she and the child did ? How could Vanessa had left this child here while she lived in luxury? No marital problems could justify that.

The little boy nodded his head. His eyes were practically glued to Theo's face. He seemed fascinated by Theo.

" What's your name, honey ? ," Theo asked gently.

The thumb came out just long enough for him to whisper shyly," Benji. Benji Clyde. I'm this many years old. " He lifted up three grubby fingers to show Theo. Theo smiled , saying," Oh you're a big boy, aren't you? " Benji nodded. Then he whispered around his thumb," I big boy. Big mean man hurt my mommy. I didn't see him. I close eyes. I hear him hurting Mommy. He hurt mommy. She was crying. He hurt her. He mean. "

Theo's eyes welled over with tears at the small simple words. As did Reed's.

" Well, Benji Clyde, can you come outside with me ? Until the doctor comes to check on your mommy ? I promise I'm not the bad man. Neither is Reed. The bad man is gone forever. You're safe. "

He reached out his hand to the child.

Benji looked at it.

Then he nodded. He reached out to grab it tight. Theo picked up the child gently and carried him out of the apartment, trying hard to shield his eyes from his dead mother.
