The following morning, the four friends and Pikachu hung out in the front yard of Ash's house. Misty leaned on the fence as they talked, "So what's the plan for today?"
Before Ash or May could suggest anything, Drew flicked his hair. "I was hoping we could finish our battle, Ash?" He was certain Ash would still be up for it.
Drew was speaking Ash's language. "You bet!" Ash made a determined fist.
"Aw, can't we do something else?" May sighed. She experienced her fill of battles for the week by this point.
Drew crossed his arms, "Sorry, May. I'm leaving tomorrow, so I'd like to settle my score with Ash before that."
"What?!" the friends and Pikachu exclaimed.
"But Drew, we were supposed to return to Hoenn together!" May was disappointed by the news. She thought they'd have more time together in Pallet Town.
Drew chuckled. "I never intended to stay for another week, May. It's too long for me, plus my business here is over. You and Ash are a couple now. I needed to be here to see that through," the coordinator revealed.
"You only stayed to ensure Ash and I got together?" May didn't realize Drew cared that much. He nodded in response to her question.
"Do you feel healed enough?" Misty referred to his injuries.
"Yeah, I feel well enough to travel to Hoenn. I'm all set. When I head to the port tomorrow, I'm taking the next boat there is," Drew informed them. They were surprised by his planned sudden departure, but they understood where he was coming from. The coordinator wanted to continue his journey. His emerald eyes shifted back to Ash with his hands in his pockets, "So, are you ready, Ash?"
"You don't have to ask me twice," Ash's eyes glowed confidently.
"Boy, I'm glad I don't get to miss out on this," Gary felt anticipation build up as Ash and Drew stood on opposite ends of the battlefield.
The trainer and the coordinator eyed each other determinedly. Tracey served as their referee after Professor Oak allowed him to spend time with his friends.
"Their battle got interrupted halfway through, so I'm sure they'll pick up from where they left off," Misty sat between Gary and Ash on the pasture.
"Roserade and Pikachu sure look firing to go," May admired the Pokémon on the battlefield. May and Ash's Pokémon also paused to watch Pikachu battle alongside Ash. Everyone knew they were in for a treat.
"Let the battle begin!" Tracey declared, officially beginning the match.
Ash didn't waste a moment. "Ok, Pikachu, use Quick Attack on Roserade!" The mouse rushed towards the Grass-type at incredible speed, but Drew didn't seem very alarmed.
Roserade smirked slyly at her opponent. When Pikachu was about to hit Roserade, the Pokémon vanished into thin air. "Huh?" Ash and Pikachu gasped.
May was amazed by Drew's quick technique, "How was he able to do that?" the sapphire-eyed girl looked on.
"Amazing, Roserade knew to use Substitute without any command from Drew. Substitute allows the Pokémon to move quickly and leave an afterimage of themselves, confusing the opponent. It's a very clever trick. Ash needs to be on his guard," Gary commented.
Ash made a fist, "You want to play that way, fine. Pikachu, use Agility and Quick Attack!"
"Roserade, why don't we use your speed to twirl around using Magical Leaf and Poison Powder!" The Sinnoh Pokémon quickly spun while using both moves. It created something that resembled a purple tornado.
