In Which Gilbert Is Interrogated, and Alfred Is About to Do Something Dumb
"May I come in?"
Before Gilbert could refuse, or offer a reason for the refusal, Michelle took a step into the kitchen, walking right under the arm he was using to block the door.
"Hey wait!"
Michelle gave him a cold look.
"Gilbert. Is Alfred here?"
"No of course not!"
"Then you don't mind if I check?"
Gilbert was beginning to feel like maybe he'd made a mistake.
"Um, you want to search my house?"
"Is that a problem?"
It was a problem. It was a big problem. Alfred was sitting downstairs on the couch, after all. Gilbert tried to think of an excuse, looking around the house for a reason. Then, he saw something much worse. Alfred's blue eyes, peeping around the edge of the basement door. Gilbert shook his head, both as a refusal to Michelle and a warning to Alfred.
"I said Alfred is not here! Even if he was he would be hiding, so you couldn't find him!"
Gilbert tried to signal Alfred to hide, and Alfred looked thoughtful, then withdrew back behind the door. Michelle was looking more and more suspicious.
"So there's no problem if I look then."
Gilbert tried to use his brain to think of an escape. Unfortunately, Gilbert's brain only worked well in regards to mechanics and building things, which is why all of his ideas failed to get the Arthur Mark of Approval. So Gilbert blurted the first thing he thought of.
"He's not here! He's probably hiding at Ivan's!"
Michelle looked like she was buying it, and Gilbert started to relax. Then the basement door swung open, and to Gilbert's complete and utter horror, Alfred himself walked out, a red hoodie covering his Blond hair like that would disguise him, and Gilbert's heart plummeted to his stomach.
