RUDY GRACE SILVER
My father and I stared at each other as Carter scarfs down his food beside me.
I watch in my peripheral vision as Carter looks up mid-chew and glances between me and my dad.
I hear him swallow his food but my dad is the one to break the silence.
"So... after I specifically told you not to. You stayed in my daughter's room and obviously did something, by your scent. You deliberately disobeyed me, boy."
My mom chuckles before saying, "Rhett relax. They're young mates."
"That is my seventeen year old daughter messing around with a nineteen year old boy."
I shake my head at him.
"They are mates, darling. It's alright if he's a little older than her." Mom tells dad.
"Yeah? And what does the other mate have to say about this?" He asks glancing in between me and Carter.
"He doesn't know." Dad says, answering his own question.
"He's... complicated." I say. He is complicated but I won't tell my parents that my mate may have shown up here but he does not want me. I would not tell my parents that the only thing holding him to me is the mate bond.I glance over at Carter and wonder if it's the same reason he's here. Is he here because he wants to be near me or because his wolf holds the majority of the power?
He looks at me and pure adoration shines in his eyes making my heart flutter. Whether or not he means it to be there; it's there and I'll hold onto that.
I put my hand on the top of his thigh and squeeze slightly in comfort, although, I'm not entirely sure if it's for me or for him.
"What do you mean it's complicated?" My father asks.
I sigh, "he's just... complicated. I don't know how to explain it. His personal choices don't blend well with what I believe but he's my mate so... it's complicated." I answer.
"Let's leave them be for a while." My mom says, putting her hand on my dad's shoulder to pull him away.
He doesn't argue and I pretend not to notice the shift in their eyes.
Glancing back over at Carter I notice him staring off into space with a sad look on his face. I lift my hand to stroke his cheek. "Whats wrong?"
"Nothing.."
Giving him a skeptical look he sighs heavily.
"I just...I'm feeling slightly... insecure. I get the feeling your father doesn't like me much and he keeps asking about Ethan...I just..."he trails off.
I pull his chin to face me so he's looking at me when I say, "Carter, trust me when I say, Rhett Silver hardly likes anyone. He's also protective and just worried. I'm young and we all know the risk of my powers."
He nods at me with a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. I lean in and kiss his forehead. "Let's go do something, yeah? I know Ellie wants to go for a run." I say pulling him close behind me.
He smiles at me, a real one this time and follows me out the door. But before we can actually get outside someone calls my name.
"Rudy?"
I turn to the sound of Parker's voice.
"Is there anyway you can talk to your parents about letting me see her? Please, I've waited so long... I can't... please..." uncle Parker pleads from the kitchen doorway.
"Parker, I understand, but you'll have to give the girl time-" he cuts me off.
"Jane. Her name is Jane." He says, suddenly angry.
"Sorry. You'll have to give Jane time to settle. She seemed pretty adamant about not wanting a mate."
"Rudy, please! Just talk to them please."
I sigh, "I'll see what I can do."
Me and Carter walk outside side by side. I'm not used to my uncle pleading with me. It hurt, I have to admit, but I personally don't think my opinion will have a sway on my parent's decision. I wasn't about to tell him that, not with the utter heartbreak etched in his gaze.
