Chapter Twelve - happy

RUDY GRACE SILVER

I want to be happy but something inside me screams that I do not deserve it...

Ethan's words replay in my mind forever. He doesn't think he's worthy of the things that he knows will make him happy.

Ellie whimpers making my heart clinch. I glance over at the time and sigh. Four thirty in the morning.

Maybe if I just went and checked on him I would be able to sleep.

That's what I tell myself when I tiptoe over to Ethan's room. Pleasantly surprised to find it slightly cracked.

I open the door and glance inside. He's sleeping but there's a frown on his face. He looks distraught even in his sleep.

I have the sudden urge to wipe the expression off his face. I know it's a bad idea but I can't stop myself.

I walk into his room quietly and smooth his hair back off of his forehead. He doesn't startle and I take that as the invitation to lie beside him.

This is ridiculous and everything I've wanted to do for a long time.

He pulls me closer to him although I know he's not awake. He's moving closer to the heat. Which just so happens to be me.

He startles awake and I curse myself.

"Wha- what are you doing?"

"Ethan please let's just pretend for tonight. Just let me stay and we'll go back to how it was tomorrow. Just let it be tonight, please."

He doesn't say anything but he pulls me against his chest and I soak in whatever he's willing to give me.

If it's only for tonight then I'll die happy tomorrow.

"Hey, have you seen-" holy shit.

I smile at the sight of them. I know how much Ethans hurt Rudy. Yesterday I thought they were going to kill each other then do some unholy things.

But it ended how it always does: disappointing.

I truly hope they work out whatever's between them.

The goddess put us together for a reason but she also put her with Ethan for a reason. She needs us both to thrive.

I wake up better rested than I have in years. Then I notice the body of warmth and the smell of lavender. Rudy.

So it wasn't a dream...

I take in her pouty face. It's an expression I haven't seen before.

My heart pounds in my chest as I take in the beautiful woman in my arms.

Under different circumstances I might have been the most lucky man in the world. But selfishly, she's not a hundred percent mine.

I sigh and try to keep the happiness close to my heart. Thankfully, The bitterness doesn't win.

She wakes up with a groan then a smile spreads over her face.

"Hey." She says in a lazy tone. I smile slightly.

"You should smile more often it looks good on you."

And that one sentence sobers me up. I knew what she was trying to say. She was trying to say that I should smile because it made me look good but smiling implies that I'm happy and maybe in this moment I am but this isn't my reality no matter how much I wished it was.

I get out of bed and grab clothes out of my closet before leaving the room to change.

"You shouldn't have left mate." Rune snaps at me.

"Don't give me shit." I say aloud even though it's directed towards my wolf.

I get dressed quickly before heading downstairs, not surprised to already find my mate down there.

When she sees me she's gives me a breathtaking grin even though there's a storm in her eyes.

"Good morning, Ethan." Mom says smiling at me.

I mumble a morning before sitting down at the table.

Carter isn't there yet, which is surprising considering he's usually always up Rudy's ass any chance he gets.

"Have you gone to see your parents Rudy?" Dad asks.

Rudy's eyes shoot to meet mine before she answers, "no, um, I was actually going to go today..."

I can't help the feeling of protectiveness that rips through me. I would blame it on this damned mate bond but in reality it's more than that, even trying to pretend I hate Rudy I've grown to like her. And maybe that part is the mate bond but it's there now. And it might be the reason I say what I do next.

"Do you want me to come with you?"
