Now unfotunatley I do not own many of the charecters in this story. This is a fan fiction. Thank you for reading and im sorry that this first chapter is kinda slow. It will pick up I promise. Very soon it will pick up. Lots of element to this story. I hope you enjoy if you take the time to read it.
I stared out the window as the carriage wobbled down the cobble stone road. It was raining. Something that was not entirely unusual for London. I remember one time when it didnt bother me. I thought the ozone was wonderful. The constant smell of fish coming from the sea was one of the most endearing things about London. And then He died. Now the world seems quite dull, as if in one single motion the light was vaccumed from the world. Funny to believe that I somehow lived my life before him. I'm not sure how to continue.
The carriage rolled to a stop outside the flat. I flung open the door and climbed out. I sighed and watched as I walked under the gate. Knowing it was the last time I would walk through it. Being sentimental wasnt a good quality in my profession. We were in a sense nomads. We couldn't get attached to anything. I opened the door and walked inside.
Mrs. Heritage greeted me with a forced smile. I took note of how odd that was. I had told her of my departure previously and although she seemed sad, I knew she was happy to see me leave. I had been a terrible renter. I didnt used to be. We used to rent the flat together; him and I. But now that he had been gone for 6 months. My department finally decided I should come back.
There was no longer anything I could do. The mission was over. I had succeeded and yet failed. I wish there was a way for me to have gone with him. But there was not. I had another enternity to wait out. One just as grim as these last few months. That was part of the reason they had sent for me to come back. Perhaps afraid that I would never recover from this little depression, as the department leader had labeled it. My cousin, Castor had directed the department since we had been pulled into this mess.
You see, a century ago me and my cousin were turned into something amazing. Humans revere it as a blessing. Something God could bestow upon you. You would be alloud to live forever. Fight for God forever. Until somehow "they" found your achilles heel. Somehow the enemy figured out the one place to cut you that could kill you. Then you would, finally, be done.
Though even after that there are some God brings back to life, if you can call it that. As far as I'm concerned, a century ago when I was thirteen. When I was turned into this thing I am today. When I was shouldered with this terrible burden. That day, is the day I died.
I go around from world to world and ensure that things go exactly right. I am an agent of Fate. The all ruling force of the universe. The only one who can control Fate, is God himself. God is kind, he is love, he is all things good in the world. But Fate is a terrible thing. Free will is dangled infront of the human's faces when "we" all know exactly how it is supposed to end. We are the ones who make sure everything falls into place to get the exact result we were told to create.
I climbed the carpeted stairs to my flat. To see Castor with his men packing my things. The place was sparse. All the furniture had been removed and we had never been nic nack people. I nodded at Castor who smiled half heartedly at me and took my hand. He hugged me pressing his blonde hair against my face. I just stood there. When he pulled away he put his small firm hand in between my shoulder blades.
"Its time to go," He said "We gathered everything you would need,"
"Thank you," I replied monotonly.
I picked my flask out of my coat pocket and took a long swig. Castor watched dissaprovingly. I shrugged and lit a cigarette. Taking a long puff and holding it as we walked down the rest of the stairs. Mrs. Heritage wished me well on the way out of the door. I walked outside and let the puff go.
Castor walked me down the street holding my hand. The men carrying my boxes following closely behind. We turned into a dark alley and then we were in a modern apartement. I looked around, it was rather small but nicely done all the same.
"These lodging are only temporary," said Castor "We expect your new employer to provide you with a room,"
"You expect him to?" I asked
"He will do as planned," replied Castor plainly
"Was the rest of it planned?" I asked in the same monotone
"For your information," Castor hesitated "No, it wasnt at all planned. Then again. The results were planned. They would have happened either way. It is after all your choice to decide how to achieve the intended result. You know Evangeline, we are one of the few races with something close to free will?"
"So I should be thankful for the privlege?" I replied
"Of course," said Castor, appaled "The humans did get that right,"
"You'll excuse me, for not seeing through their eyes anymore," I replied
"We were all once human," he growled
"It would have been simpler to stay human," I sighed.
"This is a stage," sighed Castor coming around and squeezing my shoulders "It will pass. Do not worry about it. It has been forseen."
"Like his death?" I mumbled
"No," he replied shortly "You ought not to act this way. This new job is a privledge. One I fought for you to have. Do not help me to see you as unfit for the this privledge,"
"Of course," I replied, monotone again "I apologize, What do I need to do?'
"You'll have an interview tomarrow," Said Castor pulling on his long black coat. "You have been supplied with the information needed for the job. Please Evangeline, try to be happy. I think you'll find it much easier in this world."
