Writing tips! (not a chapter, but it may be helpful)

So, I've only been writing for 8 months, but I have learned some good writing tips from Power of the Pen and just from experience. I'm also very aware that my writing really isn't that good, but I wanted to share writing tips anyway.

Here are some that I think are good to know!

1. Showing but not telling:
Some of you may have heard of this before, but it's basically when you describe how a character is feeling rather than just saying it plainly(I need to get better at this).

Ex. Her eyes widened as she looked at the towering beast above her. She started trembling, her mind racing. She felt butterflies in her stomach as she tried to figure out what to do.

It basically just tells the reader more and makes it easier for them to understand how the character is feeling.

2. Grammar:
I was taught that people don't care so much about spelling mistakes as they do grammar. If you don't want to learn the different types of sentences, copy and paste your writing into a grammar checker. It seriously helps.

The different types of sentences that I know of at the moment are: simple, compound, complex, compound complex.

I don't have my notes from English class, so I'll leave you guys to look it up on your own. You can practice in the comments if you'd like.

3. If your books aren't doing as well as you want them to, just pretend that you have more people reading your story than you do in reality because, someday you might have a larger audience.

4. Don't write too late:
I have learned that if I write at any time past midnight, my stories rend to get a bit... interesting. I'll add the most random details that no one needs to know, or no one will even know what's going on.

5. Have a plan in you head:
Before you start, take some notes on the plot so that you don't forget it halfway through the book.

6. This one's something that I personally like to do- listen to music:
Music might help you focus more, and it's always nice to have some background noise when you're writing!

7. Motivation:
If you don't have the motivation to write, take a break! People won't judge you for it, as we're all just human. I've gone multiple weeks without writing, and y'all are somehow still here and haven't left me yet

8. Vocabulary:
Vocabulary isn't too important, but if you want someone to think you're smarter, literally just replace 'asked' with 'inquired'

9. Dialogue:
When writing dialogue between two people, the reader will be able to figure out who's talking even if you don't add the '[character] said' at the end of every time the person talks. If there's more than three people, it may be helpful to add who's talking.

ex. "Oh! before we play, what's your name?" Tanjiro inquired. "I'm Muichiro, what's your name?" "I'm Tanjiro! It's nice to meet you, Muichiro!" "Nice to meet you too..." (Our Promise- rewrite)

See? You can still tell who's talking without adding who said at the end of every line of dialogue.

10. This isn't exactly a writing tip, but commenting:
I've learned that people who comment on a lot of stories tend to get more followers, so comment on stories if you have like 0 followers! Of course, I will never take my own advice and you have to be special for me to even think about commenting on your story. I just wait for people to find me :)

I believe those are all o the writing tips I have! I still have a lot of room for improvement when it comes to writing, but these tips have helped me!

I'll work on writing an actual oneshot soon, but I've been focusing on finishing Wilted Lotus (go read it if you haven't).

I will also never listen to that one about going to sleep. Don't be like me. Go to sleep.
