Nekane
It had been four days since the Kakutma attack. And even though Alastor knew very well the north was not behind it, he kept the people in a state of panic by training them even more and with my presence there I was now one of the commanders of training.
I didn't like it.
I didn't like having to prepare them for a war they knew very well they wouldn't be able to fight. They were lucky the last time, and I'm not sure luck strikes twice in the same situation.
The sound of approaching footsteps on my left caused me to lift my eyes off the ground to land on Travis walking leisurely without a care in the world towards me. I guess I was working with him today.
He acknowledged me with an upward nod to which I returned before gesturing for him to go first.
He pushed the wooden doors open, stepping into the rising sun that turned his light brown hair to a yellow gold. Travis wasn't that big, I noticed. The thing that made him stand out more was his height - just a few inches shorter than me - and the way his face never seemed to show emotions.
If I didn't know better I would've thought he was the very few in here that didn't fear death, but I saw the panic strangling him when we were fighting the Katkumas. I also saw the way he looked at Alastor when we were in the meeting room, the only true emotions his face ever portrayed and something in the way Alastor was aware of his hatred towards him made me believe he was more than just a lazy commander. He knew something.
Or was something.
My eyes scanned his body in a quick second, taking it all in with wonders if he might be a Delling. That would explain how he got out the fight without a scratch. Even if all of our identities were out in the open in here, I didn't trust that we were all being honest. This was Southside, and the secrets that they kept were more numerous than the dust in the air.
And us Dellings kept our secrets too. Somethings needed to be kept in secrecy in order for the job to be done.
He pushed ahead where in the middle of the field stood one of the oldest groups in a horizontal line. Despite the strong glare of the sun, they all kept their heads held high, arms glued at their side while their burning eyes fought to stay open. They rather suffer from that than the wrath of a commander.
Again just a simple human.
My eyes scanned each of their faces one by one, I could hear their heartbeat elevate every time my eyes would land on them even if they didn't dare look back at me.
In their minds I was a ruthless Delling.
That's what they were thought to believe; that we were monsters who kill anything with a heartbeat until our powers are lost and we come here seeking for refuge. Tolerating the ones we hate just to have a roof over our heads. As if we couldn't build that ourselves somewhere else.
Travis stopped a few feet away from them where they were all still in his line of vision and my eyes landed on a familiar face.
Little flower.
She had her red hair tied back in a tight braid. The loose strands that normally hid her both equally soft and sharp features now pulled back to expose the delicate skin of her face as well as her pretty neck.
I liked her like this. Everything out in the open for my eyes.
Her face was the usual hard, revealing nothing as she stared straight ahead past the shoulders of Travis. He began talking. Voice matching the boredom and disinterest in his expression.
