On the first day of classes Hally woke up with awful stomach cramps.

She laid in bed for a minute before Hermione came into the room to try and get her up again. "Hally you're going to make us late—what's wrong ?" She inquired, noting the pained look on her best friends face.

"Nothing. I'm fine." Hally lied as she pulled the blankets off of herself and tried to muster up the energy to get up off of the bed.

Once she was off of the bed she felt a uncomfortable gush of liquid between her legs. She couldn't have peed herself because it didn't feel like she had to go. Also the texture of this felt different to urine, thicker somehow.

When Hermione started to pack her books Hally took the opportunity to waddle to the bathroom and quickly shut the door behind her. She pulled her underwear down and sat on the toilet but when she looked down to her complete horror- she saw a red patch of blood in the centre of her knickers which caused her heart to drop.

Panic took over immediately as she let out a loud gasp that caught the attention of Hermione on the other side of the door.

"Hally are you okay ?!" Hermione hurriedly burst open the bathroom door- that the young witch had forgotten to lock- without giving her any warning.

The sight she was met with was her best friend utterly frozen in place whilst sitting on the toilet with widened eyes and her bloody knickers half pulled down on her legs.

"Oh,' Hermione blushed and looked at the ground wanting to give her friend some privacy, 'it's okay you've just started your period. Have you never gotten it before ?"

"So this is normal ? What's a period ?" Hally questioned as she tried to control her breathing like professor Snape had showed her to last year; all the while turning to gather some toilet paper to clean some of the blood that had gotten on her legs.

Hermione tried to hide her shock at Hally's cluelessness about her own body. She couldn't believe that no one in her life had taught her anything about this. "It's a cycle of bleeding that girls start getting at a certain age and it continues on into womanhood every month when they aren't pregnant. Well...if yours is irregular it might not be every month."

Hally looked confused at her words. "I don't really understand. So we bleed monthly when we're not pregnant ? Why ? For how long ?"

"Yes we bleed when we're not pregnant because our egg hasn't been fertilized, so we pass it along with blood, tissue and mucus. It's for five to seven days usually and unfortunately it is quite uncomfortable but I'm sure we can get you a pain relieving potion from Madam Pomfrey before classes start- if we hurry." Hermione left the bathroom at those words and walked over to Hally's trunk to retrieve a fresh pair of underwear for her. She then went into her own belongings and pulled out a package of pads before making her way back over to Hally.
