"Good morning, Dad, Mom." Maya greeted her parents before taking her place at the dining table. She looked around and noticed that her brother wasn't there. "Where's Ken?"
"He left early. They have practice today." Her mother replied.
She watched her parents, trying to find a hint of anger or disagreement, but nothing. They grew up with a strict schedule that they were required to follow. It was unusual for them to be so carefree that Ken spent more time with his friends than training. Something was not right, and Maya was sure of it.
"He's been spending so much time with those boys when he should be training." She commented while putting food on her plate.
"Leave your brother alone." Her dad said with a warning tone.
"Yes, Dad."
The three of them had breakfast in silence. Unlike other families, the Jaegers were not raised with love and compassion. At a very young age, they were expected to be fearless. There was no room for weakness or doubt, especially in her family. As her father is set to replace her grandfather, Ken is expected to follow in their father's footsteps. Maya couldn't stop wondering why their parents seemed to be stepping back from their parenting ways. Then, she remembered that she hadn't asked for her parent's permission.
"Mom, Dad, my Jenny invited me to come with her to Wolf's Port. She was invited for an interview by WF News. It'll be for the entire weekend. Can I come with her?"
"What time are you leaving?" Her dad asked.
"Before lunch..." She hesitated. Maya was unsure if she wanted to come, but since her parents seemed inclined to give her brother some freedom, she wanted to see if they would treat her the same.
"Okay. You know how to handle yourself." Fred replied, and Maya's jaw almost literally dropped to the floor.
"Seriously?" She asked, thinking her ears just deceived her.
"Yes." Her father responded before shifting his attention to his wife. "I need to go to Silver Town for a bit, but I'll be before dust."
"Okay. Take care." Louisa then turned to her daughter. "And you, young lady, be safe."
"Yes, Mom. Thanks."
Maya finished her food with little voices telling her something was off. Her parents were caring and sweet. They never cared about having fun or socializing. For them to let her leave with her friend for the weekend was something she never thought would happen. Truthfully, she expected to be scolded or for them to tell her to train. Instead, she was allowed to be free and to have fun.
What's happening? She asked herself on her way back to her room to pack her things.
---------------------
Jenny was overjoyed when Maya told her she would come to Wolf's Port. For the past week, the thought of boredom and loneliness almost made her back out from the interview. Knowing that her friend would be there with her made things so much better. At precisely eleven in the morning, the two young ladies made their way to Wolf's Port.
It only took them three and a half hours to reach their destination, and they had fun throughout their journey. They sang along with their favorite music and even took photos of places they found beautiful. When they arrived at Wolf Port, they went straight to their hotel accommodation to leave their things. There were many tourist spots in Wolf's Port that they wanted to see, but Jenny still had an interview.
"Good luck!" Maya waved at Jenny to encourage her before the latter entered the building.
"Hmmm... Now, what to do?' Maya asked herself.
