READER'S POV:
My eyes fluttered open as I awoke from my slumber. I groaned tiredly and rolled onto my side to check the time. The screen of my phone lit up after I pressed a button, the brightness causing me to squint. It took a second to adjust, but eventually I could read the clock: it was almost two in the morning. I groaned and stretched out, slowly turning back around to check on my wife.
"Love, are you asleep?" I mumbled.
However, when I turned around, Kate wasn't there. My eyebrows furrowed as I sat up.
"Kate?" I called out, scanning the dark room.
I threw off the covers and got up from our bed to search for her. It was a pretty small room, so the only other place she could be was the bathroom. I pushed the door open and turned on the light. Kate was still nowhere to be seen.
"Where the hell is she?" I huffed in frustration, turning the light back off and leaving the bathroom.
I went over to our closet to throw on my robe, tying it around my waist swiftly. Then, I slid on my slippers and creaked our room's door open. The hallway was dim and empty, not a single sound to be heard throughout it. I tip-toed out and shut the door quietly behind me. If I got caught out past curfew, I could face small repercussions; but that didn't matter as much as Kate. Price would understand, I'm sure, I thought.
As I creeped down the corridor, I peeked into every open door to see if Kate was there. Five minutes of searching went by until I heard the faint sound of typing on a keyboard. I paused to listen, slowly starting to stalk towards the noise. It was coming from the break room. The door was cracked, so I leaned forward to see who was in there.
Kate was sitting at a table, her eyebrows furrowed as she clicked the mousepad a few times. Papers were scattered around her laptop, Kate scribbling something down on one of them and flipping to the next page. I frowned, pushing the door open fully. Kate did a double-take, her eyebrows raising.
"(Y/N)? What are you doing out of bed? It's late," my wife said, placing her pen down on the counter.
I walked over and wrapped my arms around her shoulders from behind, "I should be asking you the same question. It's two in the morning, babe."
Kate sighed, her hand resting over mine. She fidgeted with my wedding ring and leaned her head back on my stomach.
"I know. Shepard had some important paperwork that wasn't filled out correctly, so I'm editing the errors to return to him this afternoon," she explained.
I was in disbelief. Shepard expected her to do all of this in one day!?
I shook my head, "Kay-Kay, he has no right to work you so hard! That's a lot of work to do in a span of twenty-four hours."
"It is an important document, lovey. I can't say no, otherwise it won't get done in time. The person who made the error is out sick, anyway," Kate reasoned.
I sighed and nodded in understanding, deciding to drop it.
"Alright then, I won't force you to come back to bed. I am staying with you until you're finished, though," I stated firmly.
