"You've got to be kidding me! My wife is almost full term and could go into labor in a few weeks and I have too go halfway across the world to kill some innocent person", Travis stormed. This wasn't his first rodeo but the feeling of completely lying to the person he loved the most in this world hurt the same every time.
"Do I look like I'm kidding?", the man said blankly as he started the car.
"I'm so sorry Tay. I love you", Travis whispered out his window.
"Oh, save it. It's not like you'll never see her again", the man reasoned, turning left.
"No, but you can't re-watch the birth of your child over again", Travis said with storms in his eyes. The drive was almost completely silent the rest of the way there.
Travis was dead tired but guilt and regret kept him up. If only Travis had realized as a dumb 18 year old that his actions would hurt those he loved most. All because Travis was stupid and got himself a drug dealer. By the time Travis was 19, he was a full time drug dealer renting out a crappy basement in the middle of the city.
During Travis's short but successful drug handling career, he had gotten ahold of some pretty dangerous narcotics. Ones that could have him sent to prison for decades.
"We're here", the man said.
Travis solemnly got out of the car without a word and opened up the trunk. He retrieved his bags and slammed the trunk shut loudly on purpose, walking up the stairs of the private jet.
The drug business that Travis involuntarily worked for was very well off. In fact, the company in total owned 10 private jets.
He took his seat in the fancy leather chair. It felt wrong to sit in such a nice airplane when Taylor was at home alone with three children while 7 months pregnant. And she had not the slightest clue as to what was actually going on. Or so he thought.
Meanwhile, Taylor stood at the stove, making grilled cheese for dinner. She was simply too tired to make anything fancy for three hungry children.
A bit of the greases splashed up and hit her on her stomach.
"Shoot", she said in pain. Taylor lifted her shirt to find a small red dot on her big belly. "I'm sorry", she said to her unborn baby, gently rubbing her stomach. Taylor turned her attention back to the stove, flipping the sandwiches.
"Mommy, is dinner ready?", Cohen asked, pulling on his mom's leg.
"Almost ready. Wash your hands before dinner", she told the 6 year old.
Meanwhile, Sawyer stood behind the fridge with his Nerf gun. Both boys knew that if their father heard about this they would be grounded for life, but it was just too much fun.
While Cohen was fake begging his mom to not make him wash his hands before dinner, Sawyer seized the opportunity to strike and shot his mom with a Nerf gun.
Without even looking, Taylor knew who it was. "Sawyer Michael! Your father was warned you countless times that we don't shoot Nerf guns inside! Give it to me", Taylor stormed. Both boys had heard this voice countless times. It was the Mom Voice.
Sawyer hid it behind his back, pretending it never happened.
"Now", Taylor said in a serious voice.
Sawyer gulped, handing the gun to his mother. "I'm sorry Mommy", Sawyer said, tears filling his eyes.
Taylor didn't buy this for a moment. The twins were expert actors. "You can be sorry but you need to go to the timeout corner until I say you can get off", Taylor told him. Sawyer nodded, walking to the time out corner with his head hung low. "Just be happy your father wasn't here for that. He would have gotten the belt out", Taylor warned.
Cohen thought he had gotten away with it, so he slowly backed away. Taylor turned her attention back to the stove so the grilled cheese didn't burn.
"Not so fast Cohen Scott. Come back here", Taylor said, not even looking up from the stove.
"Trust me, I know you were involved in your little play assassination attempt there. I just do. You may ask me how, and that's because when you were in my belly and made me look like an absolutely colossal human, you guys took turns kicking me. Hard. It was almost never at once. So you communicated with your brother there. Go on time out. Nice try". Catching her boys was just too easy.
"Mommy?", Lucy said.
"Yes sweetheart?", Taylor asked, sliding all four grilled cheese sandwiches onto a plate for dinner.
"I miss Daddy", the three year old said, her lower lip quivering.
"I know honey. I do too. Why don't you make a card for Daddy for when he gets back? I'm sure he'd love that", Taylor suggested.
"Otay", Lucy agreed. Taylor laid art supplies out on the table for Lucy, pausing both boy's time out time for dinner.
Dinner was a quiet occasion. The only sound was Willow's sweet voice ranting about the various adventures her and her 'Daddy' had gone on recently. Even the times he'd given her a bath, helped her brush her teeth, and even visited a 'black man'.
"Oh, honey. We don't say that. Just because he had darker skin than us doesn't mean we just say he's a black man", Taylor corrected.
Willow gave her mom a confused look. "But he was wearing black. Like a ninja", Lucy explained.
Both boys became alert at the mention of ninjas. "Ninjas?", they said in unison.
Lucy nodded. "Yeah. He was big and scary".
"Lucy, honey, eat your food", Taylor said, cutting her wild daughter off. But Taylor couldn't help but wonder who Lucy was talking about.
After dinner, the boys both went back to time out as promised and Taylor saw uncomfortably on the couch watching "My Little Pony" with Lucy.
Suddenly, Taylor felt the urge to call Travis. She excused herself from Lucy and went to a different corner of the house, clicking on his contact. Travis always told Taylor that he was so busy on his work trips that he didn't even bring it out of the hotel. Regardless, Taylor hit the call button.
Taylor held the phone up to ear, waiting patiently. He didn't pick up the first few rings, so Taylor accepted the idea that he was probably busy.
But when Taylor returned, something shocked her. Lucy was humming to the sound of Travis's ringtone his phone solely had set for Taylor's number. But the most chilling thing was the fact that Travis had changed her ringtone for Taylor's contact that same day because Taylor wanted to surprise him when he was on his business. She had set the ringtone to "My Girl", the couple's wedding song. There was just no way Lucy would have know that particular ringtone.
Chills ran down Taylor's spine. "Lucy sweetheart?", Taylor asked, trying to keep her voice calm.
Lucy looked at her mom with matching blue eyes.
"How do you know that song?", Taylor asked, pulling the little girl into her arms.
"I heard it", Lucy answered casually.
"Where?", Taylor asked.
"Outside just now", Lucy said.
A wave or horror flushed down Taylor's spine.
