CHAPTER 16 - Abandoned

Alexis gaped as the words sank into her. She somehow expected that but hearing the words stunned her still.

"Lex, I'm containing this feeling I have had for you for more than a year already. I want you not only as a friend but more than that, honestly considering the future with you."

Sam's sincere eyes and the words he said slowed her world and made her heart pound loudly. She knew he was expecting her response but she cannot find the words to say.

"I don't know what you feel about me, but Lex, I love you," Sam spoke the words as he looked straight into her eyes.

Alexis saw in them that he meant what he said. She opened her mouth to say something when she heard her phone buzz.

She looked at her pouch on her lap and then back to him.

Remembering Carl and his command about how she should always answer his call, she moved to get her phone.

It was Mrs. Cole. But, knowing that she only calls if it's important, she looked back at Sam and said, "I'm sorry I need to take this."

She swiped into the green button after that.

"Hello," she spoke after a glance at Sam. His face was blank as he drank from his glass.

"Lex! Did you go out? I'm here outside your room," Dorothy announced with her lively voice.

Alexis paused and before she can answer, Dorothy spoke again.

"I came to talk about your payment here. You're not busy, right?"

"Yes," she snapped. "I'm on my way. Please wait up."

"Okay. And oh, don't worry about anything. I brought us some pizza."

"Alright. Be there in a minute," she replied than ended the call.

She looked at Sam in deep apology.
"I'm sorry I have to go," she spoke ruefully, meeting his eyes filled with mixed emotions.

As she stood, the waiter arrived with their food.

"But..." Sam wanted to stop her yet she spoke first.

"So sorry. I'll make it up to you, okay? I need to meet someone important." She then hurriedly began her exit. She was a few steps away when she was stopped after a thought came to her.

Is she doing the right thing? Leaving Sam behind, after his confession?

But what about Mrs. Cole? She's there already, waiting for her and they'll gonna talk about her rental. If she'll displease her, she might not get a discount. With that in mind, she continued her steps away.
Sam will understand. Surely, he will.

She arrived after more than a minute and saw Mrs. Cole pacing with her phone in hand. She smiled a bit when she saw her and gestured at her phone.

She smiled back and moved to open the door.

"Carl, you must go visit her. Don't worry about EDA, I'll take care of it," Dorothy spoke and it paused Alexis. She's sure that Dorothy is talking to Carl and she wondered who is that 'she'.

"Yes, I'm sure," Dorothy spoke as she followed Alexis inside. "Auntie needs you. Besides, it's been a while since you didn't see her."

On the mention of 'auntie', Alexis was strangely relieved.

What was that? She pushed her thoughts away as she moved on to get the box of pizza that Dorothy was holding.

The other lady gave her a nod when she did it.
