Ian's perspective

(I can't remember what Ian's roommates name is so I went with Drake)

Ian had decided to grow out of his 'I hate everything' phase.

Keep in mind, this was no easy decision for him, but he had realised that brooding didn't get him anywhere.

Drake, though the dumbass he was, had suggested taking a photo of everything that made him happy or that he was grateful of, and it wasn't a bad idea.

So Ian had done small chores around the school and saved enough money to buy one of the school cameras from the school.

The Headmaster seemed over the moon to sell him the camera. "Please, take it. I don't know how many photos are on there of me. Get rid of them all."

A few nights later, at dinner, Drake had taken his straw, broken it in two, and shoved them up his nose.

Ian had never laughed so hard. He took a photo. It captured Drake with a big goofy grin.

That same night, he thought of something else.

It took him a long time to dig it out through all his other stuff, but eventually he found it.

His scholarship.

He put the slightly crumpled paper on the desk  and took a photo.

Now, Ian sat in lunchtime detention with Drake, completely unsupervised as Mr Larson had fallen asleep at the desk.

But Ian and Drake didn't feel like doing anything rebellious. They had no prank ideas and they were still waiting for a shipment of fart bombs.

Ian leaned on the window and looked out over the cricket pitch and swamp where people were sitting on the grass chatting and pushing each other into the swamp.

Then he spotted them. Friday and Melanie were under a tall oak tree. Melanie was asleep, her head in Fridays lap, and Friday was leaning against the tree, dosing peacefully.

Ian stuck the camera out the window and took a photo.

"Nice shot dude." Drake said, looking over Ian's shoulder at the photo.

And it really was. Friday had taken off her hat and the sun hit her face perfectly.

She looked completely relaxed. No longer curious of everything or struggling to learn social normalities.

As the weeks passed, he took more photos of Friday.

He had never realised how photogenic she was.

His favourite was one where they were in science.

They had been given free choice of whatever they had wanted to make. Then they were to present it.

Friday had made a small explosive of sorts.

He hadn't seen what it was exactly, but she had put it on her hands, then when she clasped them together, a massive puff of blue smoke went up.

Ian had taken the photo just as the smoke went up. She was holding her hands away from her face, and had one eye closed, a large smile on her face, in the corner of the photo was the smoke.

Drake clicked through the photos. "Woah. I never knew Barnes was so photogenic."

Ian took a drink from his cup. "I know."

They were sitting at dinner, the conversations were loud around them and Drake had taken the camera.

"You should show her these." Drake said.

"Show me what?" Someone asked.

Ian nearly choked.

Friday looked over Drake's shoulder. "Is that me?"

She took the camera from Drake and began clicking through the photos.

Ian shot a panicked look at Drake who pursed his lips.

"Why do you have these? When did you take them?" She asked, looking at Ian.

"Um." He started. Then the camera was taken from Friday.

"Good shots, Ian." Melanie said.

Trea took the camera from Melanie. "Wow."

Mirabella had it next. "Eh, I could look better."

Ian groaned, putting his head in his hands as the camera was passed around.

He peaked through his fingers. Friday was watching the camera travel around the room.

Then she looked at him. "Why did you take these?"

No anger, no accusation, just pure confusion.

"Um, school project." He lied.

Drake walked up behind him, slapping him on the shoulder. "Nah, I told him to take photos of things he's grateful of. I guess my dude is grateful to have you, Barnes."

Ian wanted to disappear. Friday seemed to see this.

"Ok, that's enough." She said, making her way through the people reaching for the camera. "Hand it over."

They handed it to her.

She made it halfway back to Ian before she turned around. "What are you waiting for? Go back to dinner."

The students mumbled as the went back to their earlier conversations, taking their seats once more.

Friday clicked through the photos again.

She laughed when she got to the one with Drake and the straws.

She handed him the camera.

"These are really good, Ian. And for the record, I don't mind having you around either."

She went back to her table where Melanie was, already asleep.

Friday poked her gently with her fork.

Ian brought the camera up to take the photo.

"No." She said without looking over.

Ian lowered the camera, a sheepish grin on his face.
