Missy wandered out from her room, eyes downcast to her phone, headphones in.
Suspension hadn't been too bad. She'd mostly studied and lounged around the apartment.
She reached out for the fridge and pulled it open, grabbing the carton of milk and put it on the kitchen island.
Then she noticed someone else was in the kitchen with her.
She looked up, her jaw dropping slightly when she recognised the woman.
"Oh- uh, hey Miss Barnes." She stuttered, closing the fridge door and pulling out an earbud.
Then it actually sunk in. Miss Barnes, single mother of Oliver Barnes and the CEO and founder of Barnes detective agencies, was sitting in her kitchen.
"Hello, Malissa. Nice to uh, see you." She said, seeming very nervous.
"Just, just Missy." Missy said. Malissa is what her mother called her. Her witch of a mother.
"Oh." Miss Barnes said, nodding and looking down at her lap.
The silence stretched on for what felt like years.
Missy wanted to leave, but that would be rude. Besides, put aside the high reputation and status, this was the mother of her favourite classmate.
'Just pretend she's another simple parent. You're great with parents, parents love you.' She told herself.
"So uh, Miss Barnes, how are you?" She asked, putting her phone on the counter and getting a glass from the top cupboard.
"I've been well." Miss Barnes said. "And, you can call me Friday. Miss Barnes sounds weird."
Missy forced a small laugh. "So what, er, what are you doing here?"
Friday went very very pink. "I'm here to see your dad."
Missy's jaw dropped and her eyes went wide. That hadn't even occurred to her.
She pulled her face back to normal and raised her eyebrows.
"Ooooh, I see." She said, smiling. "And, uh, what is the plan for this evening?"
Then her dad walked down the hallway, rolling up the sleeves of his best shirt.
Missy's smile got bigger. "Never mind."
Her dad looked up and his ears went a shade of red one would only find on a fire truck.
"Missy. I thought you were still at basketball." He said, looking between the nervous looking woman and his smirking daughter.
"I got home about 10 minutes ago." She said, leaning her hip against the counter.
He nodded, then looked to Friday. "Would you excuse us for a moment?"
Friday nodded and he dragged Missy down the hallway.
"Sooooooo. Are you planing to wine and dine her?" Missy teased.
He gave her a sharp look and she backed off, unable to wipe the smirk off her face.
"Are you ok with this?" He asked.
She nodded. "Sure. I mean, anything to relight the flame right?"
He frowned. "What?"
She put her hands in the pockets of her track pants. "You know. How you used to date? Jame's mum, Melanie, has hundreds of stories that she told James and Oliver. Some photos too."
He nodded. "Ah, yeah, Melanie had a whole folder when we were younger."
She smiled, and kissed his cheek, "your curfew is 11, don't be late."
She messed up his hair and left him on the hallway, disappearing into her room.
Ian watched her shut her door.
Should he tell her?
No. It would only make her life harder. Not to mention the poor boy.
He took a deep breath and turned around, heading back down the hallway.
Missy was ok with this.
Maybe, if everything went well tonight, he and Friday might have another chance.
