The door swung open at once. A tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes stood there with a very stern look.
"The firs'-years, Professor McGonagall." said Hagrid
"Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here." Professor McGonagall answered while pulling the door wide.
She stood in the big entrance hall, which was so big that it could fit my whole house in it. The ceiling was very high and on the walls were hundred of torches lit. In front of us was a big marble stair case.
We all followed professor McGonagall. While walking I heard hundreds of voices from a doorway to the right, so I figured that the rest of the school was already there.
McGonagall led us into a small empty chamber off the hall. We were standing rather closer together and I felt Harrys arm pressed against mine.
"Welcome to Hogwarts" said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room."
Harry, Ron, Hermione and I exchanged quick excited smiles.
"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin" she continued "While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded with the House cup. The sorting ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I shall return when we are ready for you. Please wait quietly"
Professor McGonagall had now left the chamber and I started getting really nervous. I had no clue what the sorting was like and I didn't like the fact that it was in front of the whole school.
Harry, Ron and Hermione didn't look very eager as well."Some sort of test I think. Fred said it hurts a lot, but I think he was only joking" said Ron, looking very pale.
I looked around anxiously, but to my relieve eveyone else looked as scared as I was. Hermione was muttering every spell that she knew and was wondering which one she needed.
I tried not to listen to her, because she made me even more nervous and Harry seemed to do the same. I was waiting nervously for Professor McGonagall to come back, but suddenly something weird happened.
I gasped. About twenty pearly-white slightly transparent ghosts streamed to the black wall and they were arguing.
"Frogive and forget, I say we ought to give him a second chance-" a monk looking man said.
"My dear Friar, haven't we given Peeves all the chances he deserves? He gives us all a bad name and you know he's not really even a ghost. I say- What are you all doing here?" a ghost asked.
"New students!" said the Fat Friar, smiling around at us. "About to be sorted, I suppose?"
I nodded mutely and a few people around me did the same. It took me a while to realise that these were the ghosts.
"Hope to see you in Hufflepuff, my old-"
"Move along now. The Sorting Ceremony is about to start." Professor McGonagall said. "Now form a line and follow me"
