"A-Asterios..."
The name came out so beautifully and smoothly you almost didn't catch it. Your smile widened more, and you raised you hands to your mouth in shock.
"That's the prettiest name, like ever! Are you a Greek God or something?!" You smiled, have you just befriended some God from ancient Greece? Asterios looked at you with wide eyes, quite shocked by your enthusiasm over his name, "No, nothing in particular..." He said, looking back at his hands, embarrassed.
Your shoulders shrugged.
You didn't want to be his friend because he was a God anyway. You just thought he needed a friend.
"Meh, me neither. But that's okay, because we can pretend! Have you ever played with these?" You launched yourself out of your chair and started searching profusely through your bag
Asterios took this time to have a mental debate over this particular girl. He had more questions than answers, unfortunately.
1. Why were you talking to him in the first place? There's six girls who are your age and are playing with dolls, why join the gloomy kid at the back?
2. Why did you talk to him so casually? Weren't you weirded out by his dark wardrobe and long hair that reached his back?
3. Why did you smile at him with such cheerfulness even though he barely answered?
He was quite afraid of your joviality, to be fair. He wasn't used to it, but something in him longed for a friend.
When you were done rampaging through your backpack, you pulled out a handful of little characters. They had rubber clothing on them, and were all very colorful.
"C'mon, let's play! I have some more clothing for them here." You also pulled out a ridiculously small suitcase for their clothing.
He looked at you and while you were dressing up the character that had the same hair color as you, he gave you the smallest smile.
________
It was now the end of the first class, which was really just introducing each other. He looked over at you, who was already smiling at him with her toys, jumping off her chair and dragging him towards the back of the class, where the playtime area was.
He couldn't help but admire your smile more and more. He didn't know what it was about the specific smile, but it calmed him. Reassured him of whatever was going through his mind.
He wanted to be your friend more, as the minutes passed.
________
As lunchtime arrived, he sighed. He didn't have any food, and for the last few days, he only ate what he could buy at the grocery store with what little money he found in his mother's purse. He made sure to buy her food as well, but she'd eat it more slowly, and barely even realized her son had gone out to buy something.
Left in his thoughts, he didn't hear the otherwise very loud scraping of metal.
You huffed and puffed, determined to conjoin your and Asterios' desk. You wanted to eat lunch with him the way you've read in books or seen in TV shows. After a satisfying clank of two wooden desktops, you looked up with a proud smile.
"Hey, it worked!" You mentally gave yourself a high-five. "Hey, Asterios! Let's have lunch together." You smiled at him, and only at the mention of his name, did he turn around to face your sunny personality.
"Oh, uhh... I don't have any lunch, though..." He wanted to slap himself for saying it like that. Though, he told the truth simply because he knew you'd find out sooner or later.
