"Are you crazy?! Why would you burn the documents? You know your sentence would be lower if you did claim that you had mental health issues." Jake said in disbelief while pacing around the courtroom anxiously.

His dad just sat there quietly and stares at the 'Defendant' sign in front of him for a few minutes before mumbling:

"So what? Even if I did claim that its not going to change anything."

"Not going to change anything?" Jake repeated, his voice tinged with disbelief and frustration as he stood in front of his dad.

The weight of this conversation hung heavy in the air, the tension getting heavier as he tried not to break down into tears again.

"Do you not understand this situation, dad? If they take you away from me, I'll be put into an orphanage." he continued to speak, his eyes searching his dad's, seeking for any sign of understanding, but he could only see guilt.

He sighed whilst standing up and goes over to him and rests his hands on his shoulders before replying:

"Of course I do, but I don't have the heart to come back home without paying for the consequences that I caused myself; especially you. I don't deserve to be your dad."

Jake just stood there silently, not knowing what to say or how to convince him just for the sake of not going to an orphanage.

But there's no way out for him, all the evidence has been approved and no one is going to believe his innocence.

"Jake..." his father's voice trailed off, his heart heavy with regret after killing his wife, losing the will to live. "I know you're scared, I never wanted this or even dreamed of this happening to you. But i can't change what I did, and I can't undo the past. Besides, if they give me a 10-year sentence, I promise I'll look for you." His words hung in the air, knowing that he could get a worse sentence.

Silence flooded the courtroom, the only sound being the ticking of the clock, followed by sniffing sounds.

"S-Still..."

"It will be okay...trust me."

"As of today, 4th August 2009, based on the evidence and claims we have gathered, the jury and the judge have come to a final decision: based on your crime of the murder of your wife, including alcohol-use, Mr Sim Minjun, you will be sentenced to death." Judge Lee announced, immediately followed by reporters frantically typing onto their laptops.

"What- WHY?" Jake yelled out in shock, about to stand up to complain before feeling a hand on his wrist and turns to see Y/N shake her head at him, indicating him to sit down.

Despite all the chaos, Y/N quietly comforts him, knowing that he's trying to process the final verdict.

"It will be okay Jake, calm down...he can appeal for it when he's in prison." she says calmly, lightly squeezing his hand before turning back to watch the rest of the trial.

Shaking his head in disbelief unable to process everything, Jake stood up before storming out of the courtroom.

Few Weeks Later

"Jake, come on you have to eat something..." Y/N pleads with him, placing down a bag of homecooked food that she made onto the bench.
