Chapter Six: Clark and Felicity- Running Away

Clark Prescott walked from his dark house late at night, chatting with his sister. They were heading to the creek where they would meet up with Felicity and Willis.

“So, Charlotte, are you enjoying your new necklace? Or is it a bracelet this time?” Clark said, holding back laughter. She shot him a dirty look and said, “Shut up, Clark. If you loved Felicity even half as much as Willis loves me, you would get her jewelry too.”

Willis loved giving Charlotte presents. He would save up all the money he made in Griffin’s blacksmith shop and trade with the merchants who sometimes came to Charlottetown. Clark loved to tease him and his sister about their lovey-dovey relationship, but had to admit Charlotte had a point. He needed some money. Not just for jewelry and trinkets, but for the new idea he and Felicity had been debating.

They passed the Harvey’s house, whose population had recently multiplied when Lisette and Bruce Woodson moved in after the fire destroyed their home. James Tanner, Griffin Harvey, Bob Benedict and Albert Chester came by everyday and helped Bruce try to rebuild the house.

They arrived at the creek and greeted their significant other. Charlotte greeted Willis by wrapping her arms around his neck and giving him a long kiss. Clark greeted Felicity with an awkward hug. Clark still didn’t feel comfortable showing his affection to Felicity in front of Charlotte and Willis. Him and Felicity did kiss, but only in private.

Felicity and Clark shuffled their feet, waiting for Charlotte and Willis to finish with their ‘greeting’. Clark cleared his throat and they jumped apart. Willis smiled sheepishly and Charlotte smoothed her hair.

They lit the fire in their usual place and sat on the logs around it, Willis holding Charlotte’s hand and rubbing her palm with his thumb. Truth be told, Clark was jealous of their relationship. They made the perfect pair, those two, whereas Felicity and Clark were still in that stage of becoming comfortable with each other. Willis and Charlotte seemed to have skipped that stage all together.

“So…” Clark started. “We have a proposition. None of us are going to be able to marry who we want, right?” Charlotte bowed her head and Willis pulled her closer to him. Clark reached over and wrapped his arm around Felicity, trying to duplicate the close proximity his sister and Willis had. She looked a little surprised, but happily obliged and cuddled into him.

“We have to run away. Go to the city. Get out of this tiny little town and disconnect ourselves with our parents and other people from the village. If we run away, we can get married to whoever we want to. It’s the only way.” Clark said, looking over his friends and sister. A silence fell over the group.

Willis and Charlotte looked at each other, having a conversation without words. She nodded silently and Willis turned to Clark and said, “We’ll do it. But let’s wait a few weeks. You can get a job at the Tanner’s and save some money, and I’ll save my money from working at the Harvey’s.” He turned back to Charlotte, and murmured in her ear, “Sorry, Charie, no more presents for a while.”

She smiled and said, “I don’t need presents, Willy. Having a chance at being with you forever is good enough for me.” She leaned in and kissed him on the lips.

“So it’s decided, then. We’ll leave when me and Willis have enough money to buy a home in the city.” Clark said. Willis and Charlotte didn’t hear him, though.

Clark rolled his eyes and picked up Felicity’s hand. “Why don’t we leave the lovebirds by themselves?” She nodded in agreement and squeezed his hand.

They walked into the forest and Felicity paused when they got to the creek. She looked over at Clark, who was already clearing a place for them to sit. Felicity had other ideas, though. She shrugged off the first layer of clothing, her dress, and then the second layer, her slip, so she was standing in only her loosely tied corset and some bloomers. Clark had stopped what he had been doing and watched her intently.

Felicity smiled flirtatiously and dabbed at the water with her toe, and slipped into the cold water. She beckoned him with a finger, and he soon caught on and took off his shirt and trousers, and joined her. He swam up to her and wrapped his arms around a chilled Felicity.

“Now you see why we have to run away. Once we’re married to someone else, we will never be able to do this again. Or this.” Clark said, pressing his lips to Felicity’s.

Felicity wrapped her arms around Clark’s neck, but the moment was soon ruined by Willis, who wooped and cannonballed into the creek, splashing them. As soon as he surfaced, Charlotte followed suit and dived in with a graceful ark. Charlotte came back up and jumped on top of Willis, forcing his head underwater.

They played in the water for a good two hours before calling it a night. Charlotte and Willis said their goodbyes, which took twenty minutes, and Clark and Felicity hugged as Clark whispered sweet things in her ear and kissed her neck. The two groups split up, Charlotte with Clark and Willis with Felicity as they walked back to their homes. Willis came back, though, a few minutes later, wanting to steal Charlotte for a little while longer to do who knows what.

Clark decided he was tired and didn’t feel like waiting for Charlotte. Willis could walk her home if she wanted a walking buddy. So he set off, only to remember that he had left his coat in the forest by the creek.

He walked back to the creek, feeling light-hearted and happy about the turn of events tonight. In a few weeks, they’d be in the city, and he could marry Felicity! It would be the best life they could imagine.

A twig snapped behind him, and he quickened his pace. Another twig snapped, and Clark called out, “Who’s there?”

He felt ridiculous, being so scared and paranoid. It was probably Charlotte and Willis sneaking up on him, trying to scare him. Or an animal. Nonetheless, though, Clark hurried over and grabbed his coat, preparing to make a break for it. Too bad he wouldn’t even make it out of the forest.

The cool metal of the barrel of a gun pressed against his forehead. Before he could even beg for his life, the trigger was pulled. Clark fell to the forest floor, dead.
