Chapter Thirteen: Accusations Against the Tanner’s
Some may say that Leo Prescott is not crazy; just crazy with grief. But those people are wrong. Leo Prescott has officially gone crazy. Crazy to the point that he would call a town meeting in the square to announce something that may make sense in his mind; but not in anyone else’s.
After the death of his son, he had focused all his energy in finding Clark’s murderer. But he had lost control of his wife and daughter in the process. Now Charlotte was constantly at the Benedict’s house, and his wife was always in the city. Leo was not sure what awaited her in the city; but it was better than what was in Charlottetown.
As Leo watched the townspeople file in, he contemplated how his town would take the news. After all, they had a traitor in their midst. He was expecting a riot or a mob afterward; it was only appropriate after the brutal murder of his son. First came the Woodson’s, Bruce dragging Lisette behind him, seating her in the very back corner so no one but him would be able sit next to her. Then came Vernount’s; Bizet sitting right in front of Lisette. He turned around and chatted with her while Bruce gave him death glares.
Then the Harvey’s came, with Griffin trying to sit as close to Lisette as possible, and Myrtle trying to control a crying baby. The farmers came next, and Willis made a bee-line to the front row where Charlotte was sitting and snagged the seat next to her.
James Tanner and his family sat near the middle, and soon all the chairs in the Square were filled.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you may be asking why I gathered you all here tonight. I assure you, though, that this is not a meeting you would like to miss. Tonight, all your questions will be answered. The truth will come out, and we will finally see someone’s true colors.” Leo paused for dramatic effect, listening to the complete silence in the square.
“This person is someone you all know. You all trust him, you’ve even let your children play with this monster! He murders without mercy, he kills without a second thought! This man is-” Leo paused and looked around at the clearing, a group of overly tense people awaiting an answer.
“James Tanner.” There was a collective gasp that spread throughout the crowd.
“What!? I did no such thing! This is insane! He is a mad man! Why would I kill your son, Leo?” James said, jumping up with blazing eyes. Bruce came over and clasped handcuffs onto his wrists. “You have no proof!”He yelled as Bruce struggled to retain James.
“Ah, but I have all the proof I need. See, fellow residents of Charlottetown, a few months back, I came into the Tanner’s general store with a proposition. Since Clark was to become mayor of Charlottetown, and Lucinda would one day inherit the general store, I thought it may be wise to arrange a marriage between the two. I already knew Lucinda would be a wonderful, proper young lady who would be perfect to manage a house and town with my smart, handsome young Clark. And do you know what James said to this offer? No. He wouldn’t take it. So obviously he hated Clark enough to not allow his daughter to marry my son. He is the only one in this village who did hate Clark, so he is the only one to have committed this crime. James Tanner, in three weeks time you shall be hanged by the neck until dead. For your punishment in the meantime, you will have to build the gallows you will be hanged by. You will also be under house arrest when you are not building,”
The town was in a state of shock as James Tanner was pulled away, yelling and kicking. His family followed solemnly behind, heads down and tears pricking at their eyes.
The only one who looked somewhat happy was Bruce Woodson as he pulled James away. The reasons behind his happiness will remain unknown for quite some time, but it should be noted that this is not to be ignored.
Bruce Woodson is a very bad man.

So do you think James really killed Clark? Or is Leo completelty insane???
More will be revealed in the following chapters, but in the meantime, do you like:
Lisette and Griffin or Lisette and Bizet?
Charlotte and Willis running away or staying in Charlottetown?
Have any suggestions for who should die next (other than James, of course)?
