The sterile smell of the hospital hit me as I passed through the automatic sliding doors. My heart was beating fast and hard as I hurried down the corridor to the intensive care unit. The thought of seeing Soojin in this condition choked my throat and worry gnawed at my nerves.

The bright lights of the ward blinded me as I opened the door and cautiously moved forward. The sound of medical equipment and the monotonous beeping of a heart monitor filled the room. The atmosphere was tense and frightening. Many patients lay surrounded by curtains in the intensive care unit, I heard pain-filled whimpering and crying and felt my heart beating painfully fast. A nurse led me through the hall and I scanned the beds for Soojin's name. When I reached her, I couldn't suppress the lump in my throat. Her face was covered in bandages and she was surrounded by tubes and equipment. The intensive care had put her in a state that touched me deeply.

Her motionless body aroused a wave of despair in me. Thoughts of the uncertainty circling around her forced their way into my mind.

Was she in danger?

Would she regain consciousness?

Questions without immediate answers that worried me.

I approached the bed quietly, but didn't dare touch her hand. The fear of the unknown cast dark clouds over my state of mind. Her absence seemed to fill the room, and I could only hope that the medical professionals would do all they could to stabilize her.

A sigh escaped me as I waited for the doctor or nursing staff to provide an explanation or at least some sign of improvement. In that moment, thoughts of the past flooded through me, of all the years we had spent together and the uncertainty about the future that now hung over me like a looming storm. She had always been strong and independent in our relationship, which is why she seemed so strange to me lying in that bed.

She had always enjoyed her life to the fullest and it was scary how quickly it could be over.

"There you are," Yoonjung's voice sounded behind me as she approached the bed.

I turned to her, startled, and looked into her serious face. Her jet-black hair made her look even sterner and a shadow formed around her eyes because of the light. She must have been furious and to be honest I would have liked to avoid talking to her. "Yes, I'm here. How is she?" I asked, assuming that Yoonjung had more information.
