"Choi Beomgyu?" she repeated the name and let her gaze wander thoughtfully around the room. Her memories seemed to wander back in time. "I remember him, but I haven't seen him here. Oh, but Nam Seungmin. As far as I can remember, the two of them were seatmates and good friends."
I listened while my eyes tried to find the Nam Seungmin I mentioned. Between the many faces moving around the room, however, the search proved challenging. The crowd was chatting, laughing and sharing memories, which didn't make the task any easier.
"Nam Seungmin, okay," Soobin said as he smiled kindly and nodded politely. "Thank you very much, Eunbi. It was really nice to see you again after all these years!"
Soobin's talent for capturing people with his charm was evident on Eunbi's face. A delighted smile played on her lips and her eyes shone with admiration. It seemed that the years had not dampened his enthusiasm. I continued to scan the crowd, hoping to spot Nam Seungmin. Eunbi's information had left a new trail in our class reunion, and I was eager to see if an encounter with Beomgyu or his former friend would occur.
"Eunbi, it was really great to learn more about you," I said politely, not hiding my curiosity about Nam Seungmin. "If you still see him, let us know. We'd be delighted to meet him again too."
Eunbi nodded in understanding and wished us good luck in our search. Her smile remained, and with a friendly farewell, she disappeared into the crowd as she turned to new conversation partners. Soobin and I continued our exploration until my best friend finally spotted him first. "Yeonjun!" he shouted excitedly, pointing in the direction where Nam Seungmin was standing. "He's over there!"
I suddenly remembered this face. I had seen him in Soojin's class and spoken to him a few times. He had once been Soojin's physics partner because she had chosen him to get the top grade. We approached him and Soojin greeted him in a friendly and courteous manner. He was better at it than I was, because I eyed him uncertainly. After all, he was, or rather had been, friends with Beomgyu. Nam Seungmin turned to us and his eyes reflected surprise.
It was strange and there was a certain uncertainty in the air as we faced each other again after all these years. "Soobin ... and Yeonjun? This really is a surprise. Hello," Nam Seungmin greeted us and held out his hand.
