 Chapter 2| It's A Beautiful Day

I sighed and intentionally blocked my mind as my Mathematics teacher, Mr Jones, droned on about algebraic equations and how when you moved a positive term to the other side of the equal sign you must make sure to negate it. Apparently, we were going back to the basics, since we had failed our last test miserably. It had been three weeks since Rose had left for Maldonia, and I had to admit, I really missed her.

Mr Thompson had actually cried when he found out that she was gone. He had thrown down the beret he always wore, gone down on his knees and wailed at the loss of such incredible talent. Though Rose had an understudy, in the form of her best friend, Crystal, Mr Thompson had this notion that she was irreplaceable. Which she was, not that I would ever confess that to her.

Since she had left, my social life had literally gone down the drain. Drowned. Been flushed down the toilet. Call it what you will, the basic fact of the matter was that I had two friends left. Charlotte and Zach. Though I wouldn't really call them friends, more like really good acquaintances, since I didn't know them all too well. Anyway, they were cool to hang out with. They're the only ones who stuck by me after Rose left. Apparently, the 'friends' I had were only with me because they wanted to get closer to Rose and now that she was gone, I was an outcast.

The ones who treated me worst of all were the popular kids, or the 'pops', as they were more commonly called. They were Rose's best friends before she left. Crystal, Sarah and Kate. My worst nightmare.

I distinctly got the feeling that they didn't like me very much when she was here. Maybe it was because of the many times they slammed the door in my face during their sleepovers and I got stuck watching Oprah with Mum. Or that time they switched my shampoo with hair dye, and I had crazy pink hair for a week.

After Rose's departure, they became ten times worse. The three of them would corner me in the washroom and call me all sort of names whilst pulling my hair and making threats they rarely ever failed to carry out. Afterwards, they'd pretend to be supporting anti-bullying campaigns. Hypocrites.

Now, back to the story. Mr Jones was still droning on and on and I was about to drift off to la-la land, when I heard a voice calling my name.

"Emily," Sir Jones barked.

"Yes, sir!" I responded in a military tone.

"I have been asking you the same question for the past five minutes and you have been ignoring me for the same amount of time. Would you care to enlighten us on your thoughts ma'am?"

"No, thank you sir."

I heard some people sniggering in the back, but I ignored them.

"Well then, please answer my question. And be quick about it, I haven't got all day."

"Negative fifteen?" I guessed, shrugging my shoulders.

"The day that two plus two gives you negative fifteen, my dear, is the day pigs start to fly."

The entire class erupted into laughter, and I blushed. Mr Jones handed me a pink slip of paper.

"Looks like I will be seeing you after school," he said as the bell rang.

Great, I thought. Detention.

Lunch was no better than the rest of my miserable day. I sat at a table with Zach and Charlotte, because people avoided me like I was the plague. Zach was cracking jokes he thought were funny.

"Okay, so what's the name of the hair salon next to the grave yard?"

I groaned. "I don't know Zach, what is the name of the hair salon next to the grave yard?" Charlotte asked, encouraging him to actually complete the lame joke.
