I stared at Mum as if I couldn't comprehend exactly what she was saying. My arms hung loosely at my sides. Mum was crumpled up in a heap on the floor, crying. I walked up to the phone and dialled the number that had just called to give us the devastating news.
The speaker picked up after the third ring.
"'Allo?" said the voice, with a distinctly French accent.
"Hello. This is Emily Munroe. I would like to speak to Mr Oswald, please."
"The man you ask of is currently busy. Adieu."
The speaker was about to hang up when I heard Henry's voice in the background.
"'E says 'e vill speak viz you for a couple of minutes."
I made a face but the speaker obviously couldn't see me. Henry took the phone.
"Wonderful weather we're having, eh Miss Munroe?" he simpered, clearly anxious. I knew I didn't like that man.
"Number one, we aren't even in the same country. Try to keep up. Number two, I don't see what is so wonderful about the fact that my sister's missing!"
"Erm, well, we're working on the second point. But I am currently on my way to your house from the airport as we speak."
"What? Why? Mr Oswald, if you so much as step foot in my yard, I will tear you limb from limb, and feed your intestines to the lions at the zoo." I spoke slowly, yet clearly, for him to understand the sincerity of my threat. I didn't want anything to do with Maldonia, or whatever the country was called.
"Manners," Mum mouthed, but I ignored her. What were manners, when my twin, a part of me, my other half, was missing? Nothing. Nothing at all.
Henry was mumbling something on the phone.
"I'm sure we can discuss it civilly without any massacre. There is no need for blood to be shed," he tittered.
"How far away are you?" I asked. I wanted to know if there was enough time for me to dash to the store and buy one—or five—cleavers.
"I'm about ten minutes away from your house. And one more thing, could you possibly get me some—" I hung up on him before he could finish, and turned to face my mother, who was snivelling. The store was a ten minute walk away; I wouldn't make it back on time.
"What did he say?" she asked.
"He's on his way over. Apparently, he wants to discuss Rose's disappearance with us."
"Let him come anywhere near us again, and I am going to..."
She trailed off, muttering some words that would have caused a sailor to blush. Needless to say, I wasn't repeating them anytime too soon.
So much for manners...
A knock at the door broke my train of thought. Our faces paled. A random thought came to my mind. What if it's the people who kidnapped Rose? Maybe they're here to take me and Mum too! It obviously couldn't be Henry, since he had said he was ten minutes away. Mum cautiously gazed through the window then sighed with relief and irritation.
