I slowly turn my head towards my bedroom door.
My eyes lock with my grandmother's cold gaze. She stands with her hands on her hips and her body halfway between the hall and my room. I watch as her eyes scan over the crumpled snack wrappers scattered across my bed.
Oop -- I'm in trouble.
"Hi, Grandma," I say in a high-pitched voice, trying to sound polite even though I know what's about to happen. I feel the girls go rigid beside me, and my heart sinks.
I quickly glance at them from the corner of my eye.
They look terrified, as if all the colour had drained from their faces they know about my grandma's... Mistreatment and have tried to support me through it in the past.
When I first moved to Seoul from New Zealand, Rosé begged me to stay with her; she practically kidnapped me for a few days. But, as always, my grandma sent people to her door and brought me right back.
"I allowed you to go on a three-day trip to Bali, and now that you're back, you have responsibilities," she says, crossing her arms and stepping closer to my bed.
"I-" I try to respond, but she interrupts.
"Your friends need to leave. It's-" she glances at her watch "-23:00," she says, then flicks her gaze to me with a disappointed look.
Feeling the tension, Rosé starts to get up. "You're right, Ms. Kim. We'll head out now; it's getting late." Rosé turns to me and gives me a tight hug, whispering in my ear, "I'll message you later, okay?"
Nayeon and Irene start getting off the bed, But Nayeon notices the messy pile of empty wrappers left behind. She looks between me and Grandma with a nervous expression and quickly shoves the empty wrappers into her coat pocket. She probably thought that grandma would scold me if she left them there... She was right.
My grandma looks at the display in disgust and rolls her eyes. Neyeon shyly waves goodbye and they all scurry out of my room.
I look at the door, tears threatening to spill from my eyes, they turn back and give me one final pitiful look as they leave with their gifts in tow.
I hate when people pity me. I glare at my grandmother.
"I'm not the one you should be glaring at, Jennie. You are engaged and haven't given Kia the time of day. What a horrible wife you'll be," she snaps, raising her voice.
I push myself off my bed and storm over to her. I'm slightly taller, but that doesn't matter; her presence is like a tiger compared to mine.
"Tomorrow, you have a meeting with Kia," she says, and my jaw instantly tightens at her words.
