LEIA O'CONNOR

LEIA SPENT MOST HER NIGHT LOOKING OUT FOR BUTTERFLIES INSTEAD OF SLEEPING. They were camped out in the woods, in some marshy clearing in the complete cold. They had a few things they took from Aunty Em's, so Leia was wrapped in a thin blanket as she crouched near where some flowers were sprouting. Her hand was outstretched towards a small flower, where a monarch butterfly was perched.

She jumped when she heard Percy behind her. "You should be asleep."

"Sorry, butterflies." Leia sheepishly grinned, showing her outstretched hand where the butterfly remained docile. Her eyes remained fixed on the butterfly, watching it flutter their wings a few times before settling in her hand comfortably.

Percy nodded. "Yeah... butterflies... right." She could tell he was confused, though she didn't want to explain all about her obsession with butterflies. Instead Leia focused completely on the butterfly, watching as it fluttered in her palm. "You like them a lot."

Leia hummed, bringing her palm outstretched towards Percy. She watched him peer closely, eyes wide. "It's a monarch."

"Like Queen Elizabeth?"

Leia scoffed. "A monarch butterfly, kelp head." She gently placed the butterfly on Percy's hand, watching him cautiously hold his hand still. "You can move your hand, it won't fly off. They're my mam's sacred animal, and as long as I'm with you she'll feel safe."

"She?"

Leia hummed. "There's milkweed over there, she was probably laying her eggs. Though I think she was done because she seemed too excited when she saw me." She smiled brightly watching Percy stare at the butterfly in pure fascination. "You see her colours?"

He hummed, not saying much. It didn't bother Leia. Percy wouldn't be the first - or last - to not know what to say to her. At least he acknowledged she was there, most pretended she was just the wind. After a while of dealing with it, you become less bothered. Leia knew very few genuinely knew how to be with her.
