The boy is faced with the choice of either girl, which breaks the friendship, but he eventually chooses a third girl and the girls never become friends again. (No one ends up happy.)

The summer romance continues as it would be expected to, until Tyler risks his life and eventually, dies from saving a kid on his lifeguard duties and Emma has to learn how to deal with it.
