THE KNOWHERE GIRL
GITA KELLY IS THE NOWHERE GIRL and there is something inside of her that says, you are not human. You don't feel. You don't ache. You don't flinch. She doesn't know when this feeling started to grow. She wonders if it has always been there since the day she was born. Of course, she knows she is human. She knows it in the way her hands clench, her arms stretch, her joints pop. She knows because only humans feel, ache and hurt. Only humans can scream until their throat is raw, cry until their face burns. Only humans carry the red feeling of shame on their shoulders, even if it feels like it is going to break them in half. Only humans can wash the blood from their hands without batting an eye. Or maybe that was just her. She wishes she could stop. Feel normal. But there is no feeling normal when you are human, when you are alive.
And spare a thought for those who have not been so lucky.
JASON TODD IS A LOST BOY who should be dead. He wakes up every morning knowing that his reflection in the mirror should be a rotting corpse, not a healthy-ish, nineteen-year-old man. He should be thankful for his second chance, but sometimes he wishes he'd stayed dead. When he comes "home" to Wayne Manor he yearns to be a pile of bones buried in the ground. When he sits alone in his safe house, he imagines people setting flowers on his grave. He pulls the trigger on his gun and wonders what his gravestone would have said. Here lies Jason Todd: bastard, loner, and murderer. Jason wishes he could be better. Wishes he could be the kind of person that deserves love. Or maybe just something other than loneliness. He just wishes he could be something more than better off dead.
BOTH GITA AND JASON are sick of the reflections staring back at them in the mirror. But maybe they can help each other become something more.
A.N. Do you ever look at something you wrote and think, "Why did I ever publish this shit?" I realized that the first draft of 'The Nowhere Girl' was severely lacking in themes and didn't have much substance. There were so many things I wanted to touch on but didn't get the chance. Writing should be about sending a message to your audience (look at me, sounding like my English teacher), and with something like the Bondi stabbing happening on my home turf, I want to talk about it through this book. Gita is closely based around one of my friends whose life has been a bit more eventful than mind, growing up on a cattle farm in a mostly male dominated society, how it's hard to remove yourself from religion, the generational struggle between grandmother, mother, and daughter, and what it means to be a woman.
Also, I've gotten a lot of Gotham POV on my For You page on Tik Tok and I wanted to add some of that. It's not all doom and gloom.
Laters gators.
