Arabella POV

"The Overlook Mine." Sebastian looked up at me from his place in my lap with wide eyes at his discovery as I ran my fingers through his trussed hair.

After the events of the second trial, Professor Fig suggested I take a break from my ancient magic, including the trials. Sebastian made me lay in his dorm room, instructing Ominis to make sure I was actually resting. Neither of them were happy with me after I threatened the Keepers, but Ominis was far more understanding than Sebastian.

Ominis may be physically blind, but he's the most perceptive person I know. Right away when Sebastian took me back to their dorm that night, he knew something was wrong. He didn't mind Sebastian taking care of me, or holding me. He could feel that we both needed it. There was still a strange energy happening between Sebastian and I, and it was as if Ominis could sense it now too. So, he let Sebastian be as possessive over me as he wanted, and he didn't complain once.

It had been about two weeks since that happened, and I was genuinely feeling more refreshed than ever.

I traced the freckles on Sebastian's cheek with my forefinger. "And you think we can find the missing piece of the tryptic in there?"

"I think there's a very good chance, yes."

"Neither of you have much of a plan." Ominis chimed in from behind me. He was braiding my hair, something he liked to do so he could run his fingers through it and feel the texture of the braid when he was done. I found it incredibly intimate and leaned back into him.

We were sitting on the floor of the common room in front of the fireplace, taking full advantage of the warmth it was offering. The dungeons became so frigid during winter I wondered how it was legal to house us down here.

Sebastian smirked. "Well we don't really need a plan, we just need to fight our way through what I assume will be a horde or Ranrock's loyalists."

I felt Ominis' fingers tense in my hair. "I really hate that the two of you charge into danger without so much as a second thought."

"We said no more secrets, right? So you'll know every time we're leaving castle grounds just in case." I tilted my head backwards so I could see Ominis. He crawled his fingers up my head and down my face until he found my lips. Once he did, he moved his face to hover over mine and kissed me upside down. Then I leaned forward and kissed Sebastian on the tip of his nose, and he crinkled it in response.

Every day, I fell harder for Ominis. He kept doing little things to show me how much he cared about me.

Earlier that evening...

The upcoming trial was weighing heavy on my mind ever since the catastrophe of the second trial. After I completed it, there would only be one trial remaining until I possessed all of the knowledge the Keepers intended to share. But something felt off, wrong. Like they weren't truly sharing everything they knew. I had a feeling it had to do with Isadora and the burned portrait Sebastian and I discovered in Feldcroft and made a mental note to check in with him and see if he had any other ideas.

When I returned to my dorm after spending nearly two weeks with Sebastian and Ominis, I heard an odd buzzing sound. When I scanned the room, I saw a jar of lacewing flies on my desk with a note under it.

Remember when you fell for me? Meet me outside the boathouse after you read this.
