November 2, 2004

It had finally come. The 'dawn of justice' or the 'fall of evil'. Hikari preferred to call it her victory, though she felt far from victorious.

Pacing the hallways of the building like a security guard, she decided to pester her boss with sarcasm as a terrible method of solace.

Hikari trudged down the staircase, about to walk over to the rest of the members when she heard a man's voice call out the rather annoying alias she'd been given.

"Akira-chan, are you alright there?"

"Don't call me th--"

She raised an eyebrow as she recognised the voice, turning towards him in awkward confirmation.

There was an innocence to Kira's expression, but his eyes said it all. Fuming with destruction, narcissism, and... hypocrisy. The very hypocrisy which made her blood boil.

At that point, saying that Hikari didn't care who died or lived would've been a stretch, but it is safe to say that she had one primary goal: making him pay.

But, yet again, she found her enmity being replaced with stupid empathy.

"Uh, yeah," she fumbled, surprising herself and the man before her, who just chuckled.

"You thought I was Ryuzaki? That's the fifth time, I might as well take it as a compliment."

'Don't compare yourself to him...'

Hikari didn't flinch or even smile, just deadpanned, "What do you... need, Light?"

"Oh, I left some coffee for you on the counter, I was making some for myself so I thought..."

She grinned ear-to-ear, already trying to pick up the scent of the drink.

"Thank you!"

As Hikari made her way to the kitchen, she started feeling a little guilty for killing him off. After all, the very man she was doing it for had never even bothered to get her a glass of water.

She took a big sip of the coffee, closing her eyes in eagerness to savour it before almost spitting it out.

'Nevermind. He deserves to die.'

"Who the hell puts sugar in black coffee?!" Hikari instinctively yelled, praying that nobody heard her.

As she threw the liquid down the drain, Hikari was interrupted by what seemed to be Souichiro Yagami's voice calling out to his son.

It was done.

Heart feeling like a drum against her ribs, Hikari ran over to the work area, and as she had expected, Kira had fallen on the floor, eyes completely empty, and skin looking clammy.

She was shaking, now doubting her descisions.

Hikari looked at L, who's eyes were fixed on her, face unreadable as always, yet grasping on to his armchair. He blinked, almost encouragingly, but it felt hesitant. It was sickening, seeing him of all people so disoriented.

But, there was another who needed her more than L did.

Hikari kneeled next to the chief, staring at him intently. Souichiro met her gaze, instinctively wrapping her in an embrace, sobbing against her shoulder.

Only if he knew that the very woman who had given his shivering form warmth, was the one who'd wrapped his world with ice in the first place.

She didn't know what to do, feeling like she was on the brink of tears herself.

'No. No. I can't regret this now. Atleast it's not L. Atleast-'

She could feel the tears on her cheek.

Hikari clenched her fists tight, nails digging into her palms to the point where they were starting to bleed.

She didn't deserve to mourn him. It would be an even further insult to everybody who actually cared.

"I-I'll call an ambulance!" said the voice of Touta Matsuda, bursting with denial.

Before she could say anything, Souichiro let go of her, gently putting his hand on her shoulder as he did, and got up.

"It's no use. He's dead."

His voice was firm, but she knew better than that. He wanted to die inside. Hikari knew that. But, she knew all too well that empathy would only drag her down.
