Downtown Saint-Jean d'Angély, 3:03 PM
The white puffs of their breath mingled with the air as they sat side by side on a bench, each lost in their own thoughts.
Joseph nervously smoked his cigarette, his dark gaze fixed on the horizon, after telling her about the strange visit from Mr. de Montclair, her father.
Silent for a while, Lily-Rose finally broke the silence. "Could I... borrow one of your cigarettes ?"
Joseph turned his gaze towards her, surprised by her request. Then, he silently handed her the pack. She helped herself, her fingers briefly brushing against his.
A slight blush tinted her cheeks as she lit it, inhaling deeply the smoke to calm the butterflies fluttering in her stomach.
They sat there, side by side, smoking in silence. Joseph felt his heart pounding in his chest as he wrestled with his own emotions.
He had always been drawn to Lily-Rose, but now, with the weight of her father's words hanging over their heads, that attraction felt even more intense.
"You haven't told me what you think about all this," she murmured, her gaze searching for Joseph's.
He took a deep breath, carefully choosing his words. "I think that..." He paused, reflecting on his feelings about the delicate situation they were in.
Joseph looked at her for a moment, his dark eyes seeming to pierce hers.
Then, he took a deep drag of his cigarette, exhaling the smoke slowly into the air. "I think it's all bullshit." He continued, "And no matter what your father thinks, I can't help but be here, by your side."
Lily-Rose looked at him closely. "You mean you're not going to stop seeing me ?"
He looked at her for a moment, his gaze locked with hers. Then, with a smirk, he shook his head. "No, princess. I'm not going to stop seeing you." His tone was firm, determined, as if he had made his decision long ago.
"Joseph, you don't understand. My father... He has a lot of money, influence. He can hurt you, and your family."
"I know it's dangerous. But I can't ignore what I feel for you."
A shiver ran down Lily-Rose's spine, her chest tight with emotion. She knew Joseph's words were sincere, but she feared the consequences of their forbidden love.
"I don't want to put you in danger," she murmured, her gaze desperately searching his.
He moved closer to her, gently cupping her face in his hands. She could taste the cigarette on his lips as he leaned in, their breaths mingling in the cold air.
