Sometimes words can be sharper than any knife you shove into anyone's back.
And if you don't play your cards right, you'll end up saying something you'll regret.
The worst part is, there's no physical wound to heal.
The scars they leave are invisible, etched deep within.
And I never intended to leave invisible scars behind on Renata.
I think I was so busy tending to my own wound—and protecting myself from getting more, that I went into a different mode.
Survival mode.
It was me against everyone.
Even the woman I love.
But it felt too late to realize the misstep I took.
The damage was done and the words couldn't be unspoken.
Instead, I could only hope to heal the wound I created with kinder words.
With an apology.

♛Chapter Eighty-Nine Promise♛
Three knocks.
Three knocks and my stomach was twisting with so many different nerves.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect.
Is she upset or angry?
Or perhaps calm?
Calm might be worse.
Calm means I really messed up.
I drew in a sudden breath when the tall door drew open—revealing Renata who stood tall in her usual black pantsuit with her dark hair down and framing her beautiful face.
Which seemed to remain entirely expressionless as she stared back at me.
"I'll pick the ring up in Lyon tomorrow," Renata said, which made my face softened.
Especially as I peered into her dark eyes.
She's definitely upset.
"I truly didn't mean to take it there," I whispered.
Renata only hummed, "Well, it seems I deserve it after I left you," she determined, and her tone wasn't sarcastic.
It was genuine.
Like she genuinely believed she deserved the harsh words I said at a table full of people.
"No you didn't," I whispered, frowning as I drew in a deep breath.
Seeing her like this—watching her hide how upset I knew she was right now, seemed to only make me want to cry into my pillows for days on end.
I didn't want to hurt her.
But what else could I expect from doing something like that?
Who have I turned into?
Because I don't feel like myself anymore.
"Can I...?" I suddenly trailed off in question, motioning my head into her room.
Renata didn't hesitate to open the door wider, allowing me to walk into the familiar room as she gently shut the door behind me.
