A great wizard stood in his basement taking one last look at his beautiful daughter. She had had a terminal illness not even someone as powerful as him could save her body, but her mind.. That was a different story. He muttered the final words to his spell and watched as the process began, all that was left to do was to write a letter.
The last thing Lucy had remembered was her father putting her to sleep using a great enchantment, then just darkness. After what only felt like seconds to her she awoke on a large metal table. "Papa?" She called out not even trying to sit up, she was too sore to do so. "Papa?" She called out a little louder. "Papa." She repeated in just a low whisper.
After what felt like days she arose from her table and began to explore the basement that she was locked in. She could see a stairwell heading upwards but it was too much of a climb for her in her current state so she just wandered around the small room. She then came to a lone table that served as the only piece of furniture besides two bookshelves on either side of it. On the desk was a letter.
My Dear Lucy,
I wish I could live to see the day you breathed again, but if you are reading this then I must be dead. I'm sorry to leave you like this, but not even I can live forever. To save your life I have embedded what was left of your bodies with my most powerful spell, a protection spell. It's latent, not even I know it's great limits and feets possible with it. It will keep you safe from harm. I have only one wish for you which is that you protect those around you and bring calm to our chaotic world.
-Love, father
A single tear slid down Lucy's cheek, she was once again alone, this time it was worse than when her mother had died because this time she had no one to turn to. "What am I to do?" She cried. She then looked back to the staircase, who knows what she could find up there, but did she have any choice?
Step by step, breath by breath she made her way up the staircase, anticipating what great and terrible things could be on the other side. At last she reached the top, which was a dead end. She put her body between the floor and the roof and gave a push and the hidden trap door slid away letting the daylight floor in. She reached up and found the strength to pull herself out of the basement.
She took a moment to adjust to the light, but she was able to make out that she was in an old room. To be precise it was the family room of the old house. A stream of memories flooded her as she remembered all the good times of growing up that had occurred in that room. She began to walk forward when she heard the sound of glass breaking. She looked down to her goot and saw that she had stepped on an old photo. Slowly she bent down and picked it up.
Looking at the back of it she could tell it was an old family painting which got her excited to see her parents' faces but when she flipped it over she discovered that through wear and tear of all the years both her parents' faces had faded out. All that remained of the painting was her face which had been shielded by her parents.
She stepped out of the house and looked out onto a street she had never seen before. She turned and looked back at her house. It had been boarded off and was a much more ugly and faded color then the surrounding houses. But maybe it was just the strange lighting of the dawn. She looked up the street and saw a pair of glowing eyes. Then another, and another. She guessed they were a sort of hound but she wasn't going to be around to find out. She took off running down the street. The dogs pursued.
"Help! Help!" She called out. She did not survive an eighty year long surgical spell just to be eaten by some dogs. "Over here!" Called out a voice from out of the haze. She looked and saw a well built male of about twenty years of age standing in a doorway to a house. She ran up to him and he grabbed her by the arm and yanked her in, and slammed the door. She could hear the sounds of the dogs scratching on the outside of the door, but she was safe. At least for now.
