When your Sister Falls in Love

Austin's POV

Growing up with your older sister being an international superstar you get used to not seeing her very often. With tours, studio visits, music videos, and my own career, as we got older it became less and less I would actually get to see her. Taylor and I have always had a great relationship and even though she is older than me I found myself always very protective of her. No one she dated was good enough for her, either they were too intimidated by her success or her career. Honestly, most of them didn't stick around long enough for me to bother getting to know them, until Joe. 

Joe came into the picture late in 2016, and at first I liked him. Taylor's reputation took a hit with all of the drama surrounding the Kanye situation and when Taylor was at her lowest, Joe made her happy. I was never close with Joe, but every time I would talk to Taylor she looked happy and enjoyed the privacy he brought her. After her Reputation tour ended in 2018, she officially moved to London with Joe, which at the time was probably for the best. We still had our weekly family FaceTimes with our parents and Joe attended alongside Taylor for most of them when he wasn't filming. It had began to look like he was going to be a permanent fixture in Taylor's life and I remember a conversation I had with Taylor back in the end of 2019.

"How's London?" I ask.

"I love this city Austin. It's beautiful here, Joe and I just went on a hike earlier today." She says with a big smile on her face. 

"It's pouring here in Nashville like it has all week, so I am very jealous. Speaking of Joe, you guys still doing well?" It was a surprise when she told the family she was moving but when Tay loves someone she goes all in. 

"We are doing great." 

"You've been together for like 3 years now right? Any wedding bells in the future?" I joke, but also very curious. A blush covers her face and she glances off to the right and responds a few minutes later.

"Not yet, but we've been talking about it more and more. I can't wait." She says with another smile. I nod and make a note to ask my Dad if Joe has asked him for his permission yet. 

After we spoke in 2019, a few months later the world shut down due to the pandemic. My mom and Dad were constantly worried about Taylor being separated from us and being isolated in a whole other country. I remember one day in early in April, Taylor told us in one of our FaceTime calls she had written a whole album and planned on releasing it later this Summer. My parents were both excited for her, but I started to become more worried by how Tay's smile seemed a little bit more forced. I brushed off the thought hoping it was more about the pandemic than anything else, but as the summer turned into fall and she told us she was releasing the sister album in December I became more alarmed. Normally when Taylor writes this much something is wrong with her personal life, and when I mentioned it to our parents they were both saying it was just the pandemic but something felt off. 

It wasn't until late 2021, when I called Tay one night and I could tell something was actually wrong.

"Hey Aus." She says monotoned. 

"Teffy. What's wrong?" I ask alarmed. Her eyes are red and you can tell she's been crying. 

"Nothing. It's fine, Joe and I are in a fight." She whispers not making eye contact. I raise an eyebrow, she normally doesn't open up when her and Joe are fighting. 

"Was it serious?" 

"Serious enough that we've been on a break for the last three months." She finally admits.
