It's a warm August evening right before the 2023 football season starts when Travis comes for a visit. When he called Jason last week asking to come see us before the season started I didn't think much of it since he was unable to join us at the beach a few weeks earlier. But as we sit outside around the fire pit after putting the girls to bed, I noticed something was different about my brother in law. I can't put my finger on it, but something about him has changed. Jason lets out a loud laugh at something Travis says pulling me from my thoughts. Travis is sitting in a wooden rocking chair with a beer in one hand and his phone perched on his thigh, as I am curled into Jason's side on the couch nursing a glass of wine.

"Man you should've seen it, when we were at the beach Ellie and Wyatt were acting just like we did as kids. Wyatt kept throwing the toys and Ellie would go fetch them but when she would come back she would smack Wyatt with them. But yet, they just kept doing it!" Jason wheezes out causing Travis to burst into a fit of laughter. 

It's good to see Travis looking so carefree and honestly, happy. Earlier in the summer when we saw him he was still his loud boisterous self, but it seemed like his light was dimmed inside him. All day today and yesterday I noticed he seems more energetic and just overall more himself than I've seen him in awhile. 

"I'm sad that I missed that, I probably would've been cracking up the whole time." Travis says taking a drink of his beer. 

"We missed you there. I know the girls were looking forward to seeing you." I say narrowing my eyes at him. Almost every year we do a week long trip in Sea Isle with the whole family before football kicks back into full swing, and Travis usually joins us for a few days. This year he bailed the week of saying something came up last minute and he wouldn't make it. 

"Yeah, what was with that man? You never miss the beach trip." Jason asks raising his eyebrows at his little brother. Travis begins fidgeting in his seat and glances down at his phone before taking another drink. 

"I'm sorry I bailed on you guys. I uh- I was in New York that weekend." Travis says after a few minutes of silence. 

New York? Travis goes all over the world in the off season but once pre-season starts he usually stays local to KC or comes to Philly. Looking up at Jason I see his eyebrows furrowed and a confused look on his face.

"Why? I thought you were done shooting your commercials this year?" Jason asks. Travis looks nervous, he is shifting in the chair, refusing eye contact, and tapping his foot on the ground. I take in my brother in law who is struggling to get the words out and it suddenly hits me like a freight train.

"There's a girl." I blurt out. Travis turns a bright pink and takes a long pull of his beer while Jason sits up straighter leaning forward on his knees.

"There's a girl." Travis agrees with a soft smile. I sink back into the couch with my own grin and watch the news sink in to Jason.

"Like girlfriend material? Or another fling? Because if you seriously bailed on our family vacation for a hookup man, I'm really judging you." Jason asks with a frown. 

"So we had been causally talking for a few weeks and she has a very busy schedule and only had that weekend free to meet in person. My plan was going to be I meet up with her on Friday night and then I would drive down to the shore Saturday morning to join you guys. But then the date went so well on Friday I just couldn't leave yet, and we spent the rest of the weekend getting to know each other." 

"So she lives in New York? How is that going to work out long term? Or I guess is it still going on?" Jason pries. 

"It is still going on, and it's been incredible so far. I officially asked her to be my girlfriend last week. She lives in New York, but she does travel a lot for her career so she has been spending her downtime in Kansas City."
