A silent drive

With just three days left until the engagement, Annika had meticulously planned every detail. Tomorrow's final check was crucial as she wouldn't be present on the big day itself. Rohan's surgery necessitated her support, and Dadi, understanding the situation, had readily approved Annika's absence.

Annika was now meticulously training her new assistant, Kavya. Kavya, a recent graduate from New York University, had joined Annika's team just a week ago. The weight of handling everything solo on the engagement day caused a flicker of nervousness in Kavya.

Sensing Kavya's apprehension, Annika offered her reassuring words, "Don't worry, Kavya. You'll do fantastic! I've briefed you on everything."

( Kavya was the daughter of Mr. Shekhawat, whose wedding anniversary event Annika had brilliantly managed. Having recently graduated from New York University, she'd missed her parents' anniversary by a mere four days. Despite her father's wish for her to join his company, Kavya was determined to start from scratch. Her initial goal: find a job solely based on her merit.

Finding a job without leveraging her background proved difficult. Numerous interviews ended in rejection, and others held no appeal due to a judgmental atmosphere.

A lifeline came in the form of Rohan and Ishita, Annika's siblings. Recognizing Annika's need for support after a relentless workload, they posted an ad for a personal assistant at R.I.A. events. Kavya, familiar with Annika's company and glowing tales from her parents about their unforgettable anniversary event, saw this as her chance. Without revealing her identity, she applied and impressed Rohan and Ishita with her personality. They hired her on the spot, surprising Annika with their decision. Kavya, desperate to escape the string of rejections, begged them to let her stay. Annika, touched by the trio's earnest plea, agreed to a temporary position, giving Kavya valuable experience to add to her resume. )

Just then, Pinky entered the room. "Annika, beta," she chirped, "could you pick up the rings and jewelry from the jeweler?"

Annika furrowed her brow. "But Aunty, I'm not familiar with the location of the shop."

As if on cue, Shivay emerged from the mansion, attempting a silent escape. He'd forgotten a crucial file and needed to retrieve it. He'd tried calling Rudra and Om for assistance, but both were unavailable. With no other options, he opted for a stealthy retrieval mission. Unfortunately, Pinky's eagle eyes spotted him.

"Shivay! When did you get here?" she boomed, startling both Annika and Shivay.

"Just came to grab a file," he mumbled, holding up the forgotten item.

Pinky, oblivious to the undercurrents, seized the opportunity. "Perfect timing! Take Annika with you to Ramesh Kaka's showroom to collect the rings and jewelry."

Annika and Shivay's faces mirrored each other's shock. "Mom, you can send someone else," Shivay protested, his irritation evident. He'd been meticulously avoiding Annika for days and desired to maintain that distance.

"There's no one at home, beta," Pinky countered. "Besides, the shop is on your way to the office, and I can't entrust this to the servants. It's a jewelry matter, after all."

Annika, desperate to avoid Shivay, chimed in, "Aunty, Kavya could accompany Mr. Oberoi if that's alright."

Pinky dismissed the suggestion with a wave of her hand. "No, Annika. Kavya's new, I can't take the risk. No arguments! You're going with Shivay, that's final." With that, she whisked Kavya away for another task.

Shivay and Annika stood there, a tense silence stretching between them. He cleared his throat, breaking the awkwardness.

"Fine," he sighed, resignation lacing his voice. "Let's get this over with."

Annika simply nodded, her gaze fixed on a distant point. The prospect of being confined in a car with Shivay sent a wave of conflicting emotions through her. Nervousness fluttered in her stomach, tangled with a flicker of anticipation she couldn't explain.

Shivay, too, seemed conflicted. He cast a sidelong glance at Annika, his expression unreadable. He then stalked out the door, leaving Annika no choice but to follow.

The car ride was filled with an awkward quiet. Shivay focused intently on the road, jaw clenched, while Annika stared out the window, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. The usually bustling city streets seemed muted, the sounds of traffic a distant hum. The air crackled with unspoken tension, a stark contrast to their easy banter from days gone by.

The minutes ticked by, an eternity in the confined space. Finally, Shivay broke the silence, his voice low.

"So," he began, then stopped, seemingly unsure how to proceed.

Annika decided to fill the void. "The shop shouldn't be far from here, right?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Shouldn't be," he replied, his gaze fixed on the road ahead.

They lapsed back into silence, the unspoken words hanging heavy in the air. As they reached the outskirts of the city, the familiar neon glow of Ramesh Kaka's jewelry store came into view. An invisible wall seemed to descend between them as the car pulled to a stop.

"Here we are," Shivay announced, his voice devoid of emotion.

Annika simply nodded, grabbing her purse and stepping out of the car. The forced errand had just begun.

The moment they stepped into Ramesh Kaka's shop, Annika gasped. It was a dazzling treasure trove of jewels. Rings, necklaces, bracelets – everything imaginable sparkled under the soft lighting. Gold, platinum, precious stones of every color – the display held something for every taste.

A hint of a smile played on Shivay's lips as he watched Annika's wide-eyed wonder. It was a rare sight, seeing her so captivated by something other than work.

Ramesh Kaka, alerted to their arrival, emerged from the back, his face creasing into a warm smile. "Welcome, Shivay Beta and you must be Annika who has come to pick jewellery! It's a pleasure to see you both."

Shivay nodded politely, while Annika offered a grateful smile. Following Ramesh Kaka, they delved deeper into the showroom.

Annika cast a meticulous eye over the selection, carefully verifying that all the pre-chosen pieces, especially the engagement ring, were present. With a satisfied nod towards Shivay, she signaled for him to settle the bill. Freed from immediate responsibility, she allowed herself to drift through the shop, mesmerized by the glittering splendor. Each dazzling creation whispered tales of craftsmanship and artistry, their brilliance catching the light in a mesmerizing dance.
